What amazes me is those M's teams he was on with Griffey, ARod, Edgar, Buhner, and company and that those teams never won it all.

Not to completely discredit the above statement...but Linecum and Felix have a long, long way to go before we can say that they are replacing Johnson and Clemens.

In all likelihood, we'll never see another pitcher with the prolific K statistics that Randy Johnson put up over his career.

As many of you know, he has been my favorite for decades, and when I couldn't make it to Cooperstown 4 years ago, I figured I would hold out until Johnson's induction day.

The dude was a flat-out strikeout king.
This is true, they do have a long way. Lincecum JUST needs 3 more CYs ;)

If Lincecum keeps it up he may have similar (not saying better/overmatching) K statistics as Johnson.
"Similar" isn't really all that similar.

People have a really hard time grasping how huge 10.6 K per 9 innings is, and that was his entire 22 year career. Lincecum hasn't reached that average in a single season yet. And Nolan Ryan only reached it twice during his 27 year career. It's truly an insane accomplishment.

In 2001, Johnson was averaging 1.5 Ks every inning for the season. Just take a moment and think about that. We think a pitcher had an amazing night if they have 13 strikeouts in a game...he averaged 13.4 every 9 innings for a season. That is just sick.

Yes, his stats are nasty, one of the greatest/most dominating pitcher ever.

10.4 is not quite 10.6 but close enough, hopefully he can maintain it ;)

i think he goes in as a mariner. I hope he does anyway. He was one of my favorites. There was never a more pissed pitcher after giving up a dinger.

He would always end up giving them up to players like jay bell and jeff cirillo.

Randy was filthy

I just somehow knew there was going to be a comparison with Lincecum involved when I clicked on this thread. Especially seeing darocker post :benson:

If Lincecum ever touches 300 K's in a season, I will be shocked. In fact, I believe he's already achieved his career high.

No one, especially a LHP, will ever dominate like RJ. He was a true "freak"

Randy Johnson was the man! Hate to see him go but was glad I was able to witness of of the greatest pitchers of all-time.

I dont know if this has any significance but I just read this on espn:

Johnson has a one-year service agreement to work in some capacity for the Diamondbacks

He may have already had this in the works but looks like D-backs are courting him already. He probably should go in as a D-back as that is were he won his 4 CYs and his triple Crown.

I'm certainly not saying Lincecum is anywhere near Johnson, but he has accomplished MUCH more than Johnson did at the same point in their careers. Two Cy Young Awards and 10.2 Ks per 9 innings at age 25 is FAAAR better than Johnson. Johnson was 10-13 with 8 Ks per 9 innings at age 25.

Maine of course......
Helluva of a career......he really evolved into a "pitcher" from the hard "thrower" that he was early in his career, kind of like Koufax. Must have been scary as all get-up facing him. His HOF bust will have to have a mullet, right?

I'm hoping mullet will no be engraved into the plaque, but instead actual synthetic locks of self-moistening hair for the masses to caress.

Almost like an interactive plaque.

two cy youngs with a combined 33 wins. and before all you lincecum swallowers jump in and say he didn't win b/c giants defense or offense suck, i know that.

I could say the same about RJ. He lost 1-0 to a guy that went 5-14 with a 5.85 ERA who pitched a no-hitter. A week later who faced the same guy and lost 1-0 AGAIN. Jose Jiminez was his name. RJ had 26 strikeouts in those two games. So it's not like the Diamondbacks offense was always there for him as well.

but the fact is RJ won through his teams struggles b/c he was so dominant. he could lose those aforementioned games and still bring home 20 wins.

As a baseball fan, sad day for me. Johnson is the best strikeout pitcher of all time, and one of the best pitchers I've had the pleasure to watch. I only put Pedro and Maddux ahead of him in my lifetime.

Randy Johnson was one player that I am very glad I was wrong about. I figured that due to his late start in the majors, he might have a couple of good years then fall apart. I'm glad I was wrong about him. It's a bit odd to say, but I think that he was a bit underappreciated during his career (outside of his time with Arizona), especially when you look at his overall numbers.

As for what team he gets inducted from, what, you guys don't think he'll go in as a Yankee? ;)

I don't think there is really any question as to which team he will go in as a member of. It has to be the Diamondbacks.
