I am only collecting super-stars and fan favorites from this set because there are some 440 cards in the set, but had to pick up Dave Roberts as he is the only one in the set born in okinawa japan, and thought it was a COOL looking card. Besides, I don't know how he faired on other teams, but he was pretty clutch for the padres.

better scan when it arrives!

Why is this written in Japanese?

I respect your collecting abilities, as a Bagwell Collector I know we've tread some of the same roads. However, I remember when D&A offered those Star Factors, I remember because I purchased one. And since my focus was Thomas - I can tell you there were only two (2) available. My continual searches never revealed the numbers you recall.

Perhaps, because our search inquiries were different, you saw something I didn't. Or perhaps after purchasing mine there was a massive influx - or looking at it the other way around - previous to my purchase I had come in on the tail end of things. Regardless, perhaps you indeed saw forty to seventy copies of each player, I honestly didn't. As far as Thomas - there were a pair. After that - nada.

And...<thinking>... I can't think of an empirical way to a resolve our different recollections/experiences.

The "everyone who has one show it/chime in" type approach is inherently flawed - this board doesn't encompass every collector in the world. So that wouldn't reveal any truth(s).

<thinking s'more>

I would say we have a differing perspectives.

The Thomas is very difficult to find. I think I've seen one at auction in the last year or so. I've yet to add this card to my collection but have faith I will one day.

i stand corrected. i was assuming every player had surplus printed but looks like that wasnt the case for the thomas. ive already seen 2-3 bags in the past couple of months, with one up now. i wish i had bought them all at the time but i know that the quantity for the bags star factor was up there. with the info george provided, that would make it almost impossible to say i saw 40 of the bagwell star factor l.e.'s in the store but i want to say it was at least that high.

Useless info i do remember: i already had the bagwell star factor l.e. but was still looking for the bagwell/erstad unlimited l.e. i did the search for the bagwell/erstad in the beckett marketplace and came up on 60-70 (no joke) of the unlimited l.e.'s he also had quantity that i know was in the double digits for the bagwell star factor. i ended up buying just one of the star factors and 2 of the unlimited (i built a bags master set x2, including the fabric of the game inserts (thankfully these were #ed))

thats my story and im sticking to it. hope you guys find your thomas star factor

He was born in Okinawa Japan...all of the internationals show a backround of where the player was born.

And the internationals are written in the player's birthplace's language. So if sammy sosa's name is in spanish on the front of the card, it would probably look just like his english name.

Believe me when I say I believe you. We have different experiences and since I don't think we can ever truly come to any final resolution, it's good that collectors can see there are other opinions to be shared.

This kind of discussion can (ultimately) only be good IMO.

This is an interesting one - found from a box of '98 Donruss Collections.

I know that blank-backs are hardly valuable, but this was interesting to me
because I know how many stages these chrome-type cards go through before
meeting their plastic 'halves' and heat sealed/pressed. Meaning that more
than a few people missed the checklist element when this went to press.

Have no idea if this was a common error, but I busted about 30 of these
boxes over the years and this was the only one I found.

It's NFT or NFS, not because I collect Konerko (far from it) but I collect
issues from the final years of Pinnacle Brands for preservation &
information legacy.

And here's another one, though I have to apologize to my fellow 90's Collectors: This is from 2001, but it has an interesting history/story.

Long story short. Someone asked me about these cards since I had referenced
it when we were discussing the rarity of the corresponding redemptions. I
had told the story of how I snookered myself having bought the ChiSox
version of the card *sight-unseen* back in 2001 in the mistaken belief that
Thomas was the featured player. I knew then that a 1:800-something pack insert was decently tuff and I was unlikely to see too many cross my path, so I decided to plunk down a decent amount of green to obtain it. Turns out - it's the only one I've ever seen.

This past weekend I went through a storage facility to look for something
else and this bugger came back up to the light. <g>

I would love the Reds Super Team Card. Thought I had one but by the time I saw it it was sold.

Good discussion going! Let me help settle a few things:

1. YES - Dave & Adams did have TONS of Limited Exposure "Unlimited Talent/Potential Cards" - but not tons of Star Factors as discussed earlier

2. Lance - the 1998 Donruss Collections Checklists have their backs blanked out because the numbers on them would not have corresponded to the Donruss collections set, but rather the associated Donruss/Leaf base set. So, the blank back isn't a variation.

3. Regarding the 2001 Super Teams - just the other day I see that Griffey IS actually featured on the Reds card, despite Beckett promises that it only features Larkin. I might've found one if I'd been looking in the past 8 years! Shoot

Does anyone know about the redemptions of these? A few months ago, I had the only Griffey I've ever seen, and since there have been 5 or so sets listed. It's almost like some excess inventory was released, because I don't think everybody who had the set had a eureka, look what I've got' moment, as they weren't going for crazy prices.'

Take Care,

I thought that may have been Aaron Rowand behind Valentin at first based upon the facial hair, but after some research I think it's Mark Johnson. Assuming that's a picture taken after a grand slam, that picture was taken on 6/18/00 when Valentin hit a homer off Orlando Hernandez in the first with Lee, Durham and Johnson on base. The Sox scored 9 in that inning and went on to win 17-4 over the Yanks. It looks odd now, but Lee batted 7th most of the season with Chris Singleton batting 6th.

Nice cards, someone had a green Griffey listed the other day with a BIN of 60. The last one at auction sold for 170+.

thanks for reminding me, I really need to look at the BINs more. most of the time its just the graded reds sitting on there for a super high price or a few inflated purps. but now and then I notice like that a great deal on the BIN... they also seem to come up when you dont have the money.
