I was under the impression that it was a federal offense to buy lost mail packages? I thought they were destroyed.

I just posted a quote in the blog from their about Me page, its lost freight or something like that.

If Topps does get law enforcement involved. Wouldn't the cards become evidence? If that is the case, would the less than 5% of the remaining parallels become much more valuable?

If it is lost freight and Cargo Largo has a contract to buy it, legally and I would guess they do, they've been in business for quite some time then I'm not sure what recourse Topps would have.

Topps still winds up looking like the fool here, in my opinion.

I don't believe they have any, i'm willing to bet they may contact the seller though to try to get them back for redemptions.

How do all of these get lost in the mail?

Player to factory shipping. The player likely sent them to the wrong address. Either that or they were sent to the "wrong" address. Who knows.

I would think so, yes.

If you were Topps, would you not send a pre-printed, insured label to the players along with the cards to be signed? It would make sense and remove the possibility of a wrong-address scenario.

Well we're venturing into uncharted waters here, but what if said player lost the label or box they were supposed to return ship. I mean, these guys aren't seasoned professionals at this kind of thing to start with and to combine that with their schedule.... it just screams for potential foul up.

Topps better dig deep into their pockets, because I doubt these guys are going to fork them over for nothing. But hey, that's their problem.

I think I should just stop buying Red Refractors from Topps all together.

First I go after Alexi Casilla's RC and there end up being 10 reds instead of five, then I pick up Tosoni's five reds and they are hot.

No kidding, didn't you make out like a bandit on the Tosoni's though?

any guesses to what these lots go for, what would be the best one to corner

Well, it's still Rene Tosoni. But my guess is these auctions don't see the end.

I wouldn't bother bidding, I just talked to Topps CS and they said Topps is very involved already with these auctions and working on a resolution to this.

Looks like Cargo Largo is a legitimate business to me. If they're buying lost or unclaimed frieght, it's very likely that this scenario is what happened here. We ship stuff via UPS and Fed Ex for my business and sometimes (not often but sometimes) things just disappear, get damaged, etc. I'm sure Topps must have at some point filed a lost merchandise claim and may have even been paid out on it but I'm sure they're not thrilled to see them all show up in one lot like this. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Topps works something out with Cargo Largo to re-obtain these cards.

Topps is probably just going to offer a nice "buy" price for everything then ask ebay to delete the auctions and start sending out the cards to the ones who redeemed them.

That is what I think will be done.
