Cleveland is doing a sign and trade with Lebron so they can get draft pick compensation. I get that. I've read up on sign and trade deals and don't get something. As far as I can tell, Lebron signs a contract with the Cavs and then is traded to the Heat.

What if Cleveland signs him then refuses to trade him? He technically signed a legally binding contract. What happens then?

I know this sounds preposterous, but Dan Gilbert sounds like a sociopath. I'd put nothing past him at this point, even if he were to put out a hit on Lebron

I think in that scenario Lebron would retire, kinda like Brett Favre.

In regards to sign and trades, the trade is usually a part of the contract. Like how must contracts have stipulations, so there is something in there about being traded upon signing the document or something.

I read an article by an NBA guy a few years ago...cant remember where....but the guy made mention of the trade being in the paper work.

You're right.

The trade is part of the contract. If he isn't traded relatively soon (10 days I believe) the contract is VOIDED and the player is a free agent again.

It's happened once I believe, with Desmond Mason I think, where the trade fell apart 'cuz of a failed physical and the player just became a free agent again. I tried to look up the specific instance, but couldn't find it, but I'm pretty sure that's what happens.

Heck, at this point I wouldn't put it past Gilbert to take the contract out in public and p*** on it.
