Rick Porcello = Fausto Carmona part 2?

I think with the time and money invested in Porcello, the Tigers aren't about to move him to the closer role. Plus isn't Zumaya there already?

A bust in the hobby prospecting sense and did not live up to expectations as a prospect, certainly.

A bust as a MLBer, no.

So if he has a long career as a #3 starter (I am not saying that) you would label him a bust?

Well, frankly, I dont think he is all that good to begin with. I see him as being a middle of the rotation pitcher at best. Nothing near the elite status that all the prospectors have him destined for. Simply put, he will NEVER meat the expectations that have been put on him. Thus the bust title.

Wow. Interesting thread. Although it's already pretty out of hand, I will gladly contribute to the madness. I've followed both guys fairly closely, admittedly Carmona a little more. Folks seem to be forgetting the trajectory of Carmona's career:

2006: A few solid starts, then a disastrous stint as RP/CP.
2007: Re-converted to SP, phenomenal year.
2008: INJURY and wasn't the same after his return
2009: Just plain bad... injury/ confidence loss fallout?
2010: 3.69 ERA, 1.29 WHIP. He's back in some semblance of his 2007 form. ERA and WHIP are both a little higher, with BBs slightly up and Ks a little down. But he's been very good.

As for Porcello, I think that he has tremendous potential. I was fortunate enough to pick him up in fantasy ball last year, but I passed on him this year - a combination of high "price" and suspicions about a sophomore slump. But to those who say that he's already better than Carmona... really?! Procello got the boot to AAA this year after posting a dismal 6.14 ERA and 1.69 WHIP through 70.1 IP. While Porcello's numbers are slightly better in the minors now, only 1 of his 3 starts has been good; in the other two he's been knocked around.

As for direct comparisons (pitching type, etc.), I don't think that there's much validity here. So, I'm not exactly sure what the OP was driving at here... I think that Porcello still has plenty of time to be a reliable MLB starter although things aren't looking good now. Carmona IS now a solid starter. Only a #1 in Cleveland right now because, well, it's Cleveland... Anywhere else, he's a reliable, middle-of-the-rotation kind of guy.

He needed to work on somethings and was rushed, this minors stint will do him good.
