After researching I have a feeling that this is going to come down to an old article in a Tuff Stuff or Beckett. I guess I don't fault someone in thinking it could be scarce as there is little to no information out there about the card. However, no need to pay 4 digits IMHO.
Not just yours brother. ;)

LOL

I'm going to go ahead and call at least 100 based on the fact that I have never heard of it. If there were a few hundred more of them would've surfaced by now. Either that or nobody is interested in MLB playing cards and they are still sealed.

I'm going to continue to believe that a lot of these cards (decks) HAVE been opened. I frequent thrift stores for ebay material, and I used to see a lot of these decks offered. People that sell oddball cards have busted sets. It is very strange that relatively few auto'd cards have surfaced in the last 18 years. I kick myself in the a$$ for selling my Maddux; I'd pay $150 to get it back in a heartbeat. But first I want to see multiple copies of player signed copies to help prove to myself that they may not be TTM's if they are signed in different locations on the cards.

picture and comment were provided by Ironmanfan on the "PSA collectors Universe Forum" Okay, from my collection is an original cardboard display "point of purchase" sign from the promotion back from 1993. As noted, one deck in each display contains an autographed card (not sure by just one of the players listed or all of them). Anyways, I would suspect that there are a few hundred signed copies of each:

The popular belief is that there were only 3 players that signed, Cal Ripken jr. Fred Mcgriff and Terry Pendleton. Was your Maddux from a sealed box or was it signed after the fact?

Yep, that pretty much settles it. And just in case someone wants to talk crazy talk, IMF knows what he is talking about.

Comparing the signed Ripken to the 1990 Topps George Bush gets a big ::facepalm:: .

Those two cards are not even in the same solar system. No offense, Cal.

It is all coming back to me now. This is what I saw at OSCO Drugstore back then. The display bin was located in front of the register.

I love this post on BO by esaslo:

"This was not sold to the individual who purchased (and spent months of research and costs) determining valuation and rarity. I asked him. Again, it's all about trust! "

It's all about trust he states but how in the heck does someone spend "money" to research this card and the FCB boys not only track down another copy but the actual display sign among other information in matter of a couple days. Seems that both buyers need to be contacted with this new info if trust is truly the issue but it's more likely they tried to start their own hype machine over the card and it failed. Heck the original card might be the same one in both threads trying to up the asking price.

Never thought of that. I did check them out and they are in fact two different cards. The sigs were in different locations.

Why aren't there any of these on ebay if they are supposedly prevalent?

Fair question. Could be that collectors have had 18 years to add them to collections and they are tucked away. At the same time it could also be that some are in boxes waiting to be found. I don't think the fact that ebay has only had one offered this year is an indication of the scarcity of the card. There are a lot of Manning cards numbered in the hundreds that I have had in my saved searches for months with no luck. Doesn't mean they are rare, just means people aren't selling them. Of course with no information out there it seems until this week I could see why someone would be afraid to sell not knowing if they have just another Ripken sig or the next T-206 Wagner.

I don't think there are thousands of these signed Ripken cards out there. I do think there are at least 100, which doesn't make it a $6K card. Even if there are five of them I don't think it is a $6K card.

Plus if these cards do truely have coating over the auto I would assume it was a facsimile not an authentic signature. I would further assume that each pack either had one or the other and I got the facsimile and someone else got the authentic with some sort of COA. To an average collector they may not have noticed the sig or simple put it away thinking it was a novelty.

My thoughts too.
With the auto being under the coating, it's very possible many people just wrote this off as a facsimile signature.

Again, I love when people play the someone is hating card rather than considering hard evidence. Anyone wanna trade me a copy for my 1980 orange police Ripken?

The logic from some of those kids is downright hard to read through... ::facepalm::
