Well, I got the Gold Impulse /100 in today, and so the 1998 Zenith run is finally complete! Here's the lot of them (including an un-numbered Z-Gold).

2025 has been a banner year for acquiring hard-to-find 90's inserts and parallels. The latest one is 1998 Bowman Chrome Gold Anniversary /50. I got a tip from Chris, a fellow Alomar collector, that one had been mis-listed in an ebay auction starting at $2. There was no mention of the word gold, or serial number 50, or anything. And in the end, my $2 bid won!

So here it is, in all is splendiferous magnificence.

Roberto Alomar was very nice when I met him. I didn't get to speak to him long enough to get a real impression of the guy. I was glad to get his auto on my childhood card.

Well just because, here's one new pickup and one oldy moldy.

The new one is a 2005 Donruss Throwback Threads Throwback Collection card with a sticker autograph and a piece of "prime" jersey. Numbered to 25. I just need the one to complete this run. It's the one with the "prime" jersey, bat chip, and autograph.

And now the moldy:

1996 Topps Laser Sell Sheet, with the Alomar card featured. And it has LASERS involved. I love that. I just want sharks with some frickin laser beams attached to their heads.

Anyhoo, here's that sell sheet.

This was an interesting set, like the cans were as well. Hated having to slice open cards to get move cards, but now rip cards have become a thing. There is 1 Garvey rip card with Freeman that was too expensive for me to buy. I think it was /10. Still hoping I stumble across one or maybe a ripped remanent at least.

These are all standard sized cards I assume?

Yeah, the can was something I could get behind. Haha!

But the whole idea of the rip card, good lord. I think baseballcardpedia put it best: "In one of the stupidest gimmicks ever conceived, collectors were faced with the dilemma of having to choose to keep their jumbo 5" X 7" card intact, or tear open (and thus physically destroying) the jumbo card to see and obtain the standard-sized card. Ultimately, collectors by and large chose to perform "Cardboard Caesarians" by slicing the backs of the jumbo cards with a razor blade to remove the smaller card".

I did buy one Alomar card from 2020 Topps Rip just because I have to have bizarre crap in my collection, even if I hate it. :-)

Anyway, the silver and gold impulse cards, plus the one in the photo above them, are the 5x7 cards. The ones in the photos above those are standard 2.5x3.5 ones.

The "base" 5x7 has been sliced open, you can see the razor blade line on the back. But the silver and gold impulse cards are both intact, with the smaller cards inside. But I'm leaving them as-is. I could slice them open and see what I get, but the odds of pulling something valuable, like a Z-Gold of Griffey or Jeter or Pedro, are pretty slim.

Aye laddies! I've harpooned me a white whale!

1998 Pinnacle Plus Team Pinnacle Mirror /25.

Forgive the back scan, the damn thing is in a slab and my scanner didn't like the back side. But it's real, it's legit, and it's in my collection. And it now holds the record for most I've ever paid for a baseball card. But I've only seen one other for sale in the last 12 years, and if it takes 12 more years for another to surface, I might not even be here. Carpe diem!

Got a relatively minor pickup today from 2002, the Fleer Mini /50. Really glad to have it though. It's just so damn satisfying to find that one last card you need to complete a run, right? Here's the lot of them:

Bet that gold back gets missed by many people! At first I thought it was just the number, but see now that all of the test is gold. Still, seems like an odd concept for a parallel.

Yeah, it's an outlier. I always assumed it was some king (er I mean "kind", no kings today :-)) of homage to a vintage gold back issue. But searching TCDB for gold back didn't yield much, so I guess Fleer just had an excess of gold ink to get rid of that year...

Another nice pickup, from fellow Alomar collector Hector, who is selling off his incredible collection. The 1999 UD Textbook Excellence Quadruple /10.

And this one from some rando seller in Texas, the 1998 Topps Stars Gold Rainbow /99. I don't really dig this set, or this parallel, and the card itself has some serious chipping. But it was good to just get an example, check it off the list, and never have to think about it again.
