It's a shame when anybody's life becomes in jeopardy.

Magic seems to have beaten it.

Good luck to Roberto and his loved ones.
:(

You don't beat AIDS, you manage it. But I got what you were saying ;)

I'm not sure who you are talking about, though I'm not doubting you. Billy Bean was the first major leaguer to officially come out of the closet of which I am aware.

I'm not sure either, but it was a black player from the 70's-80's. It's on the episode of OTL with Tuoalo if anyone has it taped and can find out for me.

It is John Amaechi and he played until 2003.

I know about him also, it wasn't him. It is a black MLB player.

Ok, I thought from reading people were trying to figure out the NBA Player. Not sure who else for baseball, we know it definitely is not Mike Piazza per his press conference.

Glenn Burke? And I don't think he was gay, but former Indian Carlos Martinez died from AIDS related illness a few year ago as well.

I feel bad for Alomar. If the allegations are true, it seems like his decisions and judgement are driven by pride and shame on either a personal or cultural level. And it's really too bad, there are so many treatment options available to HIV+ individuals today than ever before. It is still a chronic condition and the effects of the disease coupled with the side effects of the medications can make the going rough at times but it is more of a managable disease now than the death sentence it was 25 year ago.

BINGO! Glenn Burke...and I'm positive that was the guy on the video.

Edit: Also, check out search results on google and his player page on Wikipedia has this quote: “They can't ever say now that a gay man can't play in the majors, because I'm a gay man and I made it." - Glenn Burke

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that. I still think Alomar coming out would be a lot more impactful.

I think it is interesting that ESPN and CNNSI don't have this on their websites. Actually I'm kind of glad they don't since this is more of a personal issue for him. I'm curious as to when we will start hearing about it on the major sports sites and networks though since it is a delicate issue, plus it is only rumor at this point. I'm sure once it is covered, they will rehash all the history of Magic Johnson and how AIDS/HIV affects sports.

It's up there on CNNSI. It was on the front page right before I left work a little after 5. It's on the baseball page now.

OK I didn't read through all of this, but I played with a couple guys who were from Puerto Rico and said that Alomar would always dance very closely with guys in the clubs there. So if this was brought up already sorry.
