Only four pitchers in baseball HISTORY have a career sub-3.00 ERA with 3,000+ strikeouts and 200+ wins; Walter Johnson, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson and Pedro Martinez. Of the four, Gibson won 59% of his decisions, Seaver won 60% of his decisions, Johnson won 60% of his decisions and Martinez won 69% of his decisions.

I hate to say it but I feel like the baseball writers need another Ruth to vote in on the first ballot... I think he deserves to be first ballot but will be stiffed by the writers who believe in that crap about how everyone should wait at least a year to get in.

I would be sad to see him not make it in on the first ballot. Man was he good...just so fun to watch dominate his opponents.

I don't care about stats

Pedro is the only player in major league history to bitchslap Don Zimmer

That alone makes him a first ballot HOFer

How he isn't on that greatest Post-War pitchers poll blows my mind. He's one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, let alone Post-War.

He pitched in a crazy, chemically enhanced offensive era and flat out dominated. As long as his name is not linked to PEDs in any way he should be a 1st Ballot HOFer.

Amen. The writers are an embarrassment to the institution. They've proven that they're not up to the task of being the gatekeepers.

Would love to see a panel that's one third media (print, broadcast, and online), one third veterans (players, coaches and GMs), and one third active players/coaches/GMs. I might not agree with all the votes, but it'd feel a lot less like the arbitrary egomania of a few fat dinosaurs.

And yes, Martinez deserves consideration for doing his work in the East... during the Steroids Era. That seals first ballot for me, given his dominant numbers.

I'll never understand that garbage. They've already waited 5 years from the time they retired. And what difference does it make about holding them off of the first time they are on the ballot? They are either HOFers or they aren't. It's not a difficult concept. If he is a HOFer, put him in the first time he shows up!

Maybe they do, I don't know. They should have the writers put a justification for/against each player on the ballot so people know their thought process. The first sign of the voter just being a dolt, he loses his vote. Some of these clowns don't have the maturity level to be voters.

Just looking at the numbers, he has some of the most dominating seasons of all time, and he faced teams with DHs in these years too, no easy outs....

Best seasons...
1999 23-4, 2.07, 313 SOs, 37 BBs, .92 WHIP
2000 18-6, 1.74, 284 SOs, 32 BBs, .73 WHIP

6 seasons with a sub 1 WHIP!

One thing I like to see too as a former pitcher myself, is the 141 Hit By Pitch stat, he wasnt some pushover, he took control of the entire plate and like players from years ago, kept batter light on their feet. Thats a major part of being a dominant pitcher in this "home gym era" of sluggers. :)

Voted. Easy first ballot for me. Dominated in the most difficult division in the league. I don't even see a question about that.

Definitely first ballot. If he doesn't get in the first go around, the writers should be removed from the voting process, and a new procedure should be drawn up.

Are we not assuming he's a lock for first ballot?

I don't get it.

He did rub some people the wrong way, but I don't know how much of a debate this really is. Matching his best 5 years to anyone else puts him in the top 10 pitchers of all time.

If I would not have posted some facts about how good he was, there would be many more no votes. I have seen many people throughout the years argue against him on this very board and others. Heck, he wasn't even on someone's "greatest Post-War pitcher" poll.

Pedro had the best 3 or 4 year run of anyone I've ever seen. Every start was a event.

I still think Clemens is the best post WWII pitcher overall (with Maddux a close second) but Pedro's peak was better IMO. I ignore PED's because it is impossible for me to determine who used and who didn't, what effect it truly had, etc. I respect and understand people who won't acknowledge the greatness of guys that used (or knock them down a peg or two), but I just can't objectively do that at this point. Maybe some day I will.

If I had a vote, he would be a first ballot HOF.

Since I don't, I would guess that in the current HOF process he gets in on the 2nd year or maybe the 3rd.

Which is to say I think the current process is dumb.

Chris Gilmore can you tell me who voted "no"?

Is it trolls or legitimate votes?

If it is legitimate votes than please, speak up.

carrsallstars - Agreed, sadly I don't think he will get in his first year even though he 100% SHOULD.
