I know it's not exactly an answer to your question, but I say keep the redemption card. There's an extremely small percentage of collectors out there who would actually want that card, but if you locate one of them, you'll get more from them than you will from Upper Deck. I myself am trying to collect a master set of 2007 UD SP Rookie Edition baseball, and when I say master set I mean EVERYTHING....all autos as well as unscratched (and now expired) redemption cards. I have found the redemption cards are harder to locate than some of the more rare SP autos from the set. I happened to see a 2-year-old youtube video of a guy in Australia doing a box break and he pulled one of the redemption cards. I contacted him just on a whim that he might still have it and he did! He asked me what I would pay and I said $4 plus shipping. He accepted my offer but honestly, I would've offered much more to have it.
Anyway, you may not find many of those collectors who want your expired redemption right now, but my guess is that 20 years down the road for sure some 1998-99 SP Authentic set builder or a Glen Rice supercollector will HAVE to have that card and will be willing to pay a hefty amount for it. Expired redemption cards are discarded way too quickly these days (just like old wax wrappers once were) which is making them rare (even if nobody is taking notice right now), so don't be surprised if they are listed in Beckett down the road as a result of increased demand.
So did you send it out today, or did you decide to take my advice and keep it?
Honestly, I have waffled on what to do with this card. I am just curious if UD would do anything for me (I doubt they would, and as stated previously...I wouldnt expect them to) but I am curious to find out if this card would bring anything on Ebay. I have a stack of cards to send to one of the bigger Ebay consigners, Probstein123 and I thought I would let him work his magic on this card 1st. If I get no decent bids I think i will send this one in to Upper Deck. I will link the auction here when Probstein puts it up for sale. Thanks for the advice....I honestly never gave it a thought that a expired redemption could be worth anything
Btw, I lived in McHenry when I was like 7 years old before moving to Gurnee. I won a Care Bears coloring contest at the McHenry Pizza Hut and won a bunch of free Care Bears stuff. So McHenry will always have a special little place in my heart! hehe
