I was taking a break from Ebay and got to thinking - with all the great players in 2012 and the build up of several names, which one will be THE bust? I'm not gonna name names because I don't prospect as heavily as some of ya'll do. Darvish? Cespedes?

Well I don't prospect either but I'll chime on cespedes. Although the hype was a little bigger then his preformance thus far, he's having a very solid mlb rookie campaign. One of the if not the hottest hitter since the all-star break, and on pace for 20hr, 70-75rbi, batting over .300, 15-20sb's, and spent some time on the dl. I wouldn't consider him a bust at all. He's only going to get better in years to come

lol I was waiting on that one...I want to really believe the dude will rock it next year, but there's always that fear of the sophmore slump. I'm rooting for him...but meh.....we'll see :)

Cespedes is the real deal. Hosmer sophomore slumped and had bad luck. Darvish has control issues. I'd say the biggest bust is Pineda.

Sophomore slump? How about Freshman slump? Harper is young and will improve, but he has to be the biggest bust of the year by far. He's not even hitting .250 and has the worst stats of anyone in the Nationals regular lineup. He can't even hold Mike Trout's batting gloves at this point.

I assume this is not only about rookies, since Pineda and Hosmer have been mentioned.
So I think the biggest bust, or at least disappointment, has been Tim Lincecum.
7-13 with a 5.30 era and an $18 million salary.

I think its a tie between Harper, Pineda, Hosmer and maybe Lincecum. I'm probably most surprised at Hosmer. His cards were astromical

Being a 19-year old everyday player in the majors (on a first place team) is a tremendous accomplishment in and of itself so labeling that a bust lacks perspective. Mike Trout got a couple cups of coffee at 19 and hit .220. Harp got the call because Werth got hurt and played well enough to stick around after he returned. Well enough to jettison Rick Ankiel.

If we're talking veteran busts, none bigger than Justin Upton.

EDIT: Upton's 2011 vs 2012

2011
.289/.369/.529 31 HR 88 RBI 105 R 21 SB
wOBA .385
wRC+ 140
WAR 6.4

2012
.273/.356/.397 9 HR 49 RBI 79 R 13 SB
wOBA .326
wRC+ 98
WAR 1.8

I personally, now looking at the big picture, am beginning to think that Harper might be the biggest bust in relation to his card prices. Throwing the samantics out (Yes I am aware of his age and his lack of experience in the major league arena), performance vs card prices don't seem to add up very well. Don't get me wrong, his performance isn't horrible (I've seen worse), but based upon performance, shouldn't his cards carry a LESS of a premium? Or are collectors crossing their fingers and hoping and praying and wishing that he have a breakout season on the next couple of years?

Felix Hernandez has been relatively consistent year over year, but one of the more underlooked pitchers around IMO. Lincecum....a few good years, one awfull one.....reminds me of Maddux a little bit. But the point being that Hernandez's cards are relatively inexpensive next to Lincecum's.

And as for Pineda? FAIL. That's all I have to say about that guy. (for now at least)
