So far, former Vanderbilt ace and Smyrna native Sonny Gray is finding Double-A baseball to be more than manageable.

The first-round draft pick of the Oakland A’s pitched five scoreless inning on Friday, issuing five hits, striking out six and walking none in his third start for Midland.

Gray didn’t get the decision in a 2-1 win over Corpus Christi, but the right-hander’s stat line through three Double-A outings is still pretty impressive: 11.1 innings, 12 strikeouts, nine hits, two walks and a sparkling 0.00 ERA. In fact, no runs allowed – earned or unearned.

The walks stat is worth watching with Gray. He averaged 3.6 per nine innings for Vanderbilt this past season, and 4.0 in 2010. If he keeps that under 2.0, success will follow.

The A’s have to like what they’re seeing to this point.

One of the hilights of my summer was getting to watch Sonny Gray (Vandy, A's) vs. Alex Meyer (UK, Nats) in a total duel. Gray 8ip, 2er, 9k, 0bb, 4h, Meyer 9ip, 0er, 5k, 1bb, 5h.

He's clearly proven those people wrong in the 16 innings he's pitched.


He may be a starter but your laughter seems a bit premature unless 16IP is an ample sample size.
