Jackson might not ever live up to his potential.......however, he did gain much need post season experience last year.

I just dont understand why they don't ask him how he feels or what he wants to do. If they are so worried have the dr's check him out and see how his arm is looking.

I'm guessing they set this limit not expecting to have any shot at the playoffs, sometimes you have to divert from the original plan.
no athlete is ever gonna willingly cut his season short for something like this.

Davey Johnson told ESPN that Strasburg's head wasn't in the last game and that's why he struggled. All mental.
It sounded almost as if he was saying it was Strasburg's fault and not the idiotic decision by management and the intense attention it wrongfully put on him.

I would hope that the Nationals start him during the post-season, but they would still have to stretch him out again after the time off. The results after that rest period will likely not be as affective as previous and I would even say there would be an even higher percentage of injury occurring.

Yeah. I think if you shut him down you shut him down for good and don't bring him back for the post season. To have him pitch after a long lay off I think is more dangerous and just asking for trouble.

Crappy move by Johnson. I understand management signs your paycheck, but throwing Strasburg under the bus by making it seem like he is mentally soft is just lousy.

Still makes no sense since his arm is perfectly fine. You play to win now, not next year. This is the kind of decisions a losing organization makes.

When he blows his elbow out in September in a meaningless game come back and talk to me about dumb this decision is. But, you are right though, as I don't see why he couldn't have been phantom DL'd and sat out September and been ready for the playoffs.

Gotta take your shots when you have the opp. You never know if/when you'll be back. Bad move Nats.

Great move by the Nats!

Give him every oppertunity to heal properly so he can support the team for the future. With a once a generation pitcher like he is, it is crazy to put his arm at risk this year. Obviously this is not just a managerial move but rather one based on medical advice. Let his arm rest and if/when needed in the postseason we can go from there.

More crazy to have chance of a lifetime to get to World Series and you sit your best pitcher for some stupid innings count and piss off your fan base.

Sad day for Nats fans....I think it's Boras' influence not wanting one of his meal tickets to affect his own potential income. He's wanting them to save Stras' arm so he can cash in with BIG $'s from the Yankees after he's denied arbitration after next season!

Pinetar, your comparing the wrong direction. You need to compare him against the guy that would replace him.
The stat drop off to Detwiler or Jackson is minimal.

That would be Lannan. Replacing someone with a 2.6 WAR this season with someone with a .9 WAR for the past three seasons combined.

Ding ding ding....winner.

If the Nationals are in the NLCS and/or World Series, Strasburg is pitching.

and he won't be as effective and have the stamina to go as deep into the outing to save the bullpen.

Stupid to shut him down and let him rest - they should change it to pitch once a week for this 3-4 week span so he remains reasonably sharp and strong while waiting for any postseason opportunity.

as for innings, with a guy like strasburg I feel he shouldn't be penalized with innings but rather be shut down on pitch count. Say his limit is 160 innings. Why penalize him if he strikes out the side in 13 pitches for one of his innings? You should assume 20 pitches per inning for a smooth inning times 160 innings or 3,200 pitches and go from that figure so he can last more innings of work in this season if he has lots of easy innings.

The Nats dont have the best record in baseball because of one pitcher. They will be fine without Strasburg. Obviously not as good but they will be fine.

I'm not a GM, I'm not a Manager...

Gio Gonzalez is still pitching in the 7th up 10-2.

Is that smart baseball?

(He almost just hurt himself...they could be down 2 pitchers....)
