Strasburg Sales Last Night

I sent in a ton of Strasburg Base Bowmans to be graded from my 2010 Bowman w/Chrome break in May. The results were pretty good, a lot of 9.5s, a few 10s. I've been slowly auctioning them and had my last round up for sale when the news about his injury came out last week. I decided to just let them run...they ended last night and I was pleasantly surprised.

9.5s - about $28 a piece

Anyone else had similar experiences being surprised (in a good way) or have you been surprised in a much more disappointing way?

I have been selling off the cards found in the hobby sets and was getting close to $20 per in the days before the injury. The very next night post diagnosis I had one sell for $10.

The reason those cards haven't fallen off much is because alot more people can afford $20-$30, instead of the previous minimum of approximately $150 for an autograph.

I think next summer when the next wave of rookie phenoms is taking over the media and hobby would be the time to buy his cards. Once word starts coming in on his recovery the cards will go one way or the other depending on the news.

Quite often, actually.

There is a plethora of different versions of Topps factory sets - generic retail, All-Star, Hobby, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

With the exception of some versions of retail and the now-defunct (at least I think it is) team exclusive sets, these factory sets generally retain their value or actually appreciate.

Take a survey of hobby shops and I bet they will tell you that they generally sell out of hobby sets. Strasburg's card is a nice addition, but Topps would've done a brisk business on sealed hobby sets regardless.

Retail sets is another story.

Hand-collated sets sell for far less than sealed hobby sets.

I agree, even next spring training when the hype is building around everyone else and nothing is being said about Mr. Strasburg might be a good time to buy.

The store I go to does a boom of a business on the Hobby Sets. I know of 3 guys that go there and get like 3-4 sets every time they come out no matter the price. And these are the same guys that collect almost anything and everything. Just Friday I seen the Trio come and between them they drop about 2k in a matter of 1 hour they ripped some there and then left to go have a drinking and rip party at one of the guys house.

Lots of people buy hobby sets for their kids, things like that.

I actually was just talking with a guy at work, a week ago about this.

I honestly shooed him away from buying box sets to save for his kid (just born) and said I'd just buy one box of each BC product from each year...20 years down the road that could be supercool to have all those unopened.

Heck, think about if you had just done that since 2001 when chrome autos came out!

I would say more so the 'present' than the future.

No one really know what the future holds. If he comes back in 2012 hitting 100mph, striking out 10+ every 7 innings and picks up where he left off, they will surely climb back up. Probablly not to 'first hype' Stras levels, but...
