First, Kudos to Topps for taking the gamble to sign Strassy exclusive. Whether it works out well or not, nice to see them finally ponying up to play. Funny part is, last year Topps complained to MLB and MLBPA what a terrible thing exclusive deals are. They said it was "ruining the industry". I guess times they are a changin'. This should be interesting.

How does it feel to have made the "E" word a buzz-word, Brian?

i can't believe how main stream Brian made the "E" word in this hobby either :benson:

Re: How Topps should handle Stras cards in 2010

But heres the thing, under Baseballs "RC Logo" rule, he CANT have a MLB card until he reaches the Majors. Even if he makes the team out of Spring Training, his first live card will be Bowman as he wont have a live MLB card until late May/early June.

Now unless Topps got a sweetheart bending the rules deal on this, his first MLB card CANT BE until 2010 Bowman at the very least (assuming they wont shoot themselves in the foot by putting him in 2009 BS).

This is correct.

It's interesting to see how I got corn holed for bringing up the inevitable when sure enough, 3 pages later the exact same topic comes up with no ill will.

So my "assuming" a suicide watch for RAZOR (yeah i said it) and other companies with this HUGE signing by Topps wasn't such a childish, trolling concept now was it?

Even Brian himself said he's VERY INTERESTING to see how this plays out and he'll "see what happens" for next year.

So screw all you nasayers. Maybe YOU are the ones needing to grow up and get the meat out of your mouths for one second. I gave a valid point, whether you liked it or not!

Russ,
I still don't understand "suicide watch" with repsect to Razor. We didn't even make STRAS an offer. I'm watching carefully because all of this melee may provide an opportunity.

Can't we all just congratulate Topps for trying to do something big (regardless of it it works or not)?

Don't feel too big there Brian. It was for all companies not named Topps, not just you. He was THE big fish. EVERYONE wanted him. Admit it or not, if Razor could have signed him, would you not?

A few thoughts, with little structure...

One thing that can be assumed...Topps having exclusive rights to MiLB and MLBP makes the negotiation process a whole lot easier. Boras/Strasburg could not control the image rights...only the autograph rights, so they might as well chase the money as well as the box graphics.

Upper Deck's USA Strasburg cards I believe will indeed lose value once the first Strasburg Topps autograph comes out.

I do also believe that Strasburg on the boxes, coupled with the insane media hype train that Strasburg comes with is just the type of player/surge that this hobby may need.

Topps' exclusive deal with Strasburg has a far better chance of improving the hobby for all companies involved than hurting any.

I think it's great Topps did this, but my question is why hasn't anyone at Topps (or UD) noticed that Brian Matusz spent half the season in the bigs? I sure thought that would warrant a rookie card or two.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think he is still rookie eligible next season. Now we have to deal with Topps "withholding" players that can have RCs at the end of the year, so they can get them into the next year's early products.
