Actually, I'd attribute most of that to what has been happening in the rest of the marketplace with the leagues rolling up exclusive contracts. You want to pin a medal on someone for that, pin one on Upper Deck, with UD having the NHL exclusive for a while now.

With all due respect Jaypers, Upper Deck did that over a decade ago.

I didn't say Brian invented the concept.

Yeah you just gave him credit for making it a buzz-word

So, you just knock it off to coincidence that after he did his thing with his baseball products, Topps got exclusive rights to both MLB and Milb licensing, the WBC and now Strasburg, all within the space of a year.

Uh huh.

Not coincidence, nothing to do with it. The licensing exclusives came from the leagues. They saw what they consider problems & they tried rectifying the issues with monopoly-like exclusives. It's just an new era in an ever-evolving saga. At the risk of bashing my buddy BG again, I don't think I've seen a single innovation put into a razor baseball product that would be confused as a hobby-worthy one.

The Strasburg thing is Topps promoting their product just as UD has done over the years, it's a winning formula.

As for everything else sucking because it doesn't have SS in it, only time will tell. Stras could turn out to be the next hill-ace, or the next Brien Taylor or Gregg Jeffries. The true ace might be an afterthought in 09bdp.

The hype comparison of Strasburg to Prior is fair IMO. I would say that nationally it tilts toward Strasburg, but locally it tilts toward Prior because of what everyone thought he was going to do for the Cubs. No matter how grand Strasburg is in the next couple years, he is not enough to pull the Nationals up into the NL East race.

How Topps should handle Stras cards in 2010

You might not like this, but this is how Topps should handle Stas for 2010.
Think of it from their view, not from a collectors/investors and it will make sense.

Topps releases two Stras cards in Bowman (April).
One is a BOWMAN auto and the other is a base Bowman Chrome non auto.

They will sell a TON of cases and everyone will be happy beause you can get both an auto and BC of him in the same box. At the very least, youll have a 1 in 3 box chance of a base BC which will sell for $20 or more.

But then comes Bowman Chrome (August) and this will make many mad but they SHOULD make a Bowman Chrome auto of him. Will that hurt the earlier Bowman auto? Heck yes but again, they will sell a TON more of BC because now hes got a BC auto.

But if the signing means Ackley and Tate are coming too, think how crazy strong the above two products could be.

He will most likely be in Topps Series I 2010, so that means he will most likely be in chrome. He will be a base chrome in 2010 Bowman and than be an auto in 2010 Bowman Chrome Baseball. This is the way that I see it.

Topps Ser 1 is already sold out at Topps. If I were Eisner I'd put him in Ser 2.

Ah okay. I knew he would be in one of them. Good point.

Re: How Topps should handle Stras cards in 2010

But heres the thing, under Baseballs "RC Logo" rule, he CANT have a MLB card until he reaches the Majors. Even if he makes the team out of Spring Training, his first live card will be Bowman as he wont have a live MLB card until late May/early June.

Now unless Topps got a sweetheart bending the rules deal on this, his first MLB card CANT BE until 2010 Bowman at the very least (assuming they wont shoot themselves in the foot by putting him in 2009 BS).

Uh huh.

Upper Deck had EXCLUSIVE rights to the 2006 WBC... Upper Deck 1

Upper Deck has had EXCLUSIVE rights to Jordan, LeBron and a few others for years.... Upper Deck 2

Upper Deck started the EXCLUSIVE rights for a sport when they took full control of Hockey cards... Upper Deck 3

Kinda looks like Upper Deck started it all.... Brian (Razor) was 0 for 3.... guess they struck out.

It's interesting to see how I got corn holed for bringing up the inevitable when sure enough, 3 pages later the exact same topic comes up with no ill will.

So my "assuming" a suicide watch for RAZOR (yeah i said it) and other companies with this HUGE signing by Topps wasn't such a childish, trolling concept now was it?

Even Brian himself said he's VERY INTERESTING to see how this plays out and he'll "see what happens" for next year.

So screw all you nasayers. Maybe YOU are the ones needing to grow up and get the meat out of your mouths for one second. I gave a valid point, whether you liked it or not!

I think it was more of how you said it than the fact that you brought it up at all.

I guess.
Didn't think it was too harsh. It was truth.
All the said companies not named Topps I'm sure wanted to blow their brains out since they didn't sign GOD.

Guess the Sally's need thicker skin. Oh well. I made my point. I'm done.

Does that mean all his upper deck USA stuff just fell 50% instantly?

Yes.

Really? I would think this would hold those UD values if not even raise them. Those are his only UD cards, they are still his first mainstream cards. If he gets hot, many collectors will want his first and only UD cards.

I tend to agree.
I'm assuming all the USA stuff and even the SP AUthentic will hold it's value.
Like you said, it's his first issues Mainstream cards, and they are out 1 full year before.
USA > Tristar & Razor. I think they will hold their value.
I'd much rather have a Strassy '09 USA or SP Authentic Auto compared to a '10 Topps Auto. ;)

But I bet Mr. Unique will have a different opinion. :)
