It should've been inserted. There were supposedly two copies of each Red produced that year, both signed by the respective player. One was supposed to be saved for replacement (without the 3M sticker on the back), but Phil Hughes convinced the Topps rep to let him keep one. Or at least, that's what I was told by the owner of a card shop who was friends with Hughes and had the card at the time (this was 2007).

There are four of those printing plates (one of each color) and I owned one of them.
I bought mine on eBay a few years ago and sold it to a huge Gio collector who used to post a lot on FCB.
I have a scan of it somewhere.
It's still a great card, but not quite the masterpiece you make it out to be.

Chapman54: I am still interested in your input regarding the nickname incription sigs written by two different people.
"Double 'G' Unit" looks to be written by a female. I would guess that he had someone help him sign a stack of cards. IMO, two different people definitely signed the nickname inscriptions, but I don't think they were done after the fact.
