First off, Im not trying to predict anything or hint at anything, just using him because he's a great example.

If YOU were him and your contract was up this year (not next), what would you do with the following situation?

1. Twins offer you a 6 yr contract for 90 million (not negotiable)
2. Yanks, Mets, Sox or Dodgers offer you 7 yrs at 125 million (pick a team)

Keep in mind that YOU are a home grown talent and idol to the team and state and all it's fans before you look at the 125 number. Youve always lived in a small media market which doesnt crush you when you go 0-10.

On the other hand, you could have an extra 35 million and play on a mega big media team who have no problems with an insane payroll. Its not a guarantee, but more than likely youll always play on a contending team due to the payroll.

So, do you take the money and head out or stay home where everyone loves you (and take a lot less money)?

Hmm...if I'm joe Mauer, and I do the impossible this year and win the WS, then maybe I stick around as an immortal hero in Minneapolis, because endorsements and such will help make up the difference in salaries...

Mauer's situation is tough because every dollar he gets is another not spent to make the team better around him.

Go to L.A., join torii and thr Halos and win a title next year!!!!

The problem for Mauer is that if he signs with the Twins, he will take up a huge portion of their payroll, whereas if he signs with any of the big market teams, they will be able to spend to get talent around him pretty much regardless of the deal he signs with them. Not sure if the 6/90 has been rumored/offered, but I don't see the Twins making that big of a deal.

A. Joe Mauer isn't going anywhere.
B. If you think he's signing for 6 yrs 90 mil, you are flat out crazy.

Take the 6 years @$90mil, then sign with the Yankees after that

As a catcher, he might not have much left in him after those 6 years.

he is a hometown hero. Yes that is true, but when your 26, and you have already won 3 batting titles playing the hardest position on the diamond, and you are hands down 1 of the 5 best players in baseball, well i find it hard to fathom that he will not eventually get the 100Million dollar contract that is going to be due to him. The twins do not spend money. See Johan Santana.

Honestly, I think he should just stay put in Minnesota. He is going to get paid reguardless, why put more pressure on yourself going to a big market team where media scrutiny is common place? I mean, Minnesota isn't exactly a hot spot for news unless you live there.

I agree with Bo and Mike 100%.
No way Joe ever leaves Minnesota for any other team.

I hope Mauer plays his entire career with the Twins.
There's a certain respect and admiration for these types of players.
Ripken, Brett, Yount, Biggio, Mattingly... all great players and great people who were loyal to one team.

Mauer will retire a Twin, without any teams in between.
I think so as well.

I think 7 years, $125 million or so will get it done and yes I think the Twins will do it (not unlike the Marlins and Hanley, though likely more money, and a much riskier signing with the injury risks inherent and catcher and Mauer's history.)

The Twins would probably be willing to sacrifice having competitive teams for the duration of Mauer's contract, just to have him stay in Minnesota for the X amount of dollars he will command to stay.

The Twins organization would be committing suicide if they don't take care of Mauer.
