Interesting that people on these boards continue to say... DO NOT invest in pitchers. Yet almost every BUST in this thread is a hitter.

Well because many people stay away from pitchers except for quick flips, ofcourse most of the busts in a bust thread are going to be hitters.

On any card I bought, if I got nothing back on it, I'd be happy owning it, so it's tough to say. I guess Buchholz has the highest crash rate for stuff I have, but I'm not selling it either way, so I got that going for me.

pitchers are just so hard to predict and so many things can happen to them. I for sure say hitters are the safe bet but pitchers are the quick flip. In my case I am to greedy to make money off pitchers to say the least. ;)

Ive been lucky Ive really never had a bust just yet. Im still waiting to see what happens to Brooks Brown and Dallas Trahern. I'm luck to only be in about $100 on both guys.

Great thread, love hearing stories.

I haven't had an investment turn into a confirmed bust yet. Believe it or not, of all the cards I've bought as investments over the last three years or so (the approximate extent of my prospecting ventures so far), the most I've lost on a single card is $16.

There are a number of small investments here and there that I've made that may or may not ever pan out, but most of those were low risk, high reward kind of investments where the buy in was real low...but when you have 10+ of these, the money spent on "small investments" adds up. The beauty of this type of investment is that if any of the guys gets hot, it really pays off. And most of the guys are still only 20 years old so it's still too early to call them busts.

The most threatening thing that's happened to me as a prospector is that I have some money (maybe $200-$300) into Jarrod Parker and his injury and surgery killed his prices.

Definitely can't call him a bust though since he is likely to make a full recovery and be in Arizona within the next couple years. Despite the surgery, I'm almost certain that I will make money off of the cards I have of him before it's all said and done.

So far Robby/Robert Alcombrack is my biggest bust. Still have hope for him since I thought I read something about him signing with the Rangers.

I hope Michael Main can get things turned around otherwise Im gonna have ALOT of $$ going down the drain...

Speaking of Main doesnt a board member own his Superfractor?? I would love to get my hands on that card.....

Like a lot of other guys here, mine isn't a confirmed bust yet but I have over $500 in P.J. Phillips. The Angels moved him to the OF and he did well in the AFL this year so I'm still holding out hope.

I put in well over $1000 into Delmon Young. The losses are offset many times over by investments that did well but it still bugs me that I went against all my investing rules buying his cards. (Bought into the hype, bought when he was hot etc. etc.) He was far and away my biggest bust.

There's a fairly long list of guys who I've invested in who have not paid off over the last ten years. Others (some on much lesser levels) include Prior, Mark Mulder (not a bust as a player, but at one time his Topps Traded Auto BGS 9.5 went for $365. I did not pay close to that, but I do have 3 copies in 9.5 form as well as some others.)

Jeremy Bonderman was another guy. I have to have put in at least $500 there, probably more. Lastings Milledge (though I did sell some of his stuff for a profit, still sitting on a bunch more.)

Travis Hafner and Miguel Tejada were a pair of guys who I thought had a lot of potential in their RC Auto's. Neither has gone the way I hoped, though on Tejada especially I am sitting on some pretty sweet RC Auto's (a few of his 97 Bowman Gold Auto's) that still sell pretty okay on the rare occasions they show up.

I paid $750 for an ultimate Darius Miles auto rookie.

I didn't keep it, though, I got out at a couple hundred dollars less.

It's still open but my biggest investments currently are Lars, Laporta, Wieters, Posey and Tim Beckham. Too soon to call any busts but Beckham had a bad 2009 which hurt the value of my stash. That and the fact that it's all razor stuff.

In 2001, I got 3 boxes of 00/01 SPX basketball for Christmas. The first box I hit a Kenyon Martin Auto Jersey ($300 card). The very next box, I hit the Darius Miles SPX Auto Jersey (maxed out at $550 or $600). I was only 14, so I didn't have an ebay account and I couldn't cash in. I ended up selling them both for a couple bucks, as in $1 or $2 ::facepalm:: .

Ugh. At least you didn't pay $300 and $600 for those cards.

GREAT pulls...............if this was 2001.

I currently own over a hundred 2001 Joel Pineiro chrome parallels/Bowman rc autos/Omega rc's. I also have 60 Rafael Soriano 2001 rc autos that I bought in 2001-2002... I don't want to even think about what I paid for them back then.
