The Red Sox should cut Javier Lopez and keep up Bowden.

Yeah Lopez blew it tonight, but man seeing Lugo out there makes me throw up a little each time I see him.
He did get on base a few times but his defense is atrocious!....I really hope Nick Green still gets a lot of playing time

Ask the Rays about "wasting" someone in the bullpen. Their pen lost yet another game for them tonight.
Good pens win championships. Bowden could start, but there just isn't a spot for him right now.

If i didn't think there were better options and fits in the pen I would agree with you. Masterson will return to the pen when Dice-K comes off the DL and the decision will be who to send down. It will probably be Hunter Jones, but it should be Lopez. Masterson will return to the long relief role. Jones and Bard are being bred as RP, Buchholz and Bowden are being bred as SP. Im nearly positive the sox will need at least 1 or more starting pitchers down the road and having Buchholz and Bowden down in AAA is perfect. Also, bringing them into the bullpen diminishes their trade value, even if they perform well. Teams will always want a stud performing well in AAA, than an average+ RP

Anyone whose name ends in a Z can not pitch relief for the Sox:

.....endless list of bums the last few years!

I don't know, Pedro Martinez had that one good relief appearance. ;) I guess it's a good thing Smoltz is a starter.

On a serious note, let's hope Ramon Ramirez doesn't fall into that same category.

I couldn't agree more on dumping Lopez. Think any team is dumb enough to take him and Lugo in a package?

With some of the Red Sox fans, I think no matter who lost the game or was responsible for ending the streak, you guys would look to hang them.

The team is still hot and you're still complaining?

While you may be correct about some fans, I can say that I've been complaining about Lopez since they brought him back for Spring Training this year, and Lugo since the first whispers that Theo wanted to sign him. I'm even a member of "I Hate Julio Lugo More Than You Do" on facebook.

I know this thread is about Lopez, but what about Penny? Man, he looks washed up. If I was in charge of the Red Sox, I am not sure how many more starts I would give him. I would much rather see Buchholz or Bowden in that starting role versus him right now. We did not invest too much in him. It would be easy to swallow releasing him and giving the kids a shot until Smoltz is ready to go.

Lopez did make the error that ended the game, but he didn't make the error that cost them the game. That honor belongs to Lugo, who caused the direct action of Lopez even coming into the game. It SHOULD have been Papelbon out there in a save situation, but Lugo blew that.

I'm by no means saying Lopez is any good. I'm simply saying he's not the real reason the redsox lost that game.

Of course, this game is on a MUCH smaller scale, but it reminds me of how everyone blamed Bucker for 1986 series being blown, when really, it was a combination of SEVERAL mishaps and mistakes that took place prior to the Buckner blunder that really cost the sox the game and the series, but all people remember is Buckner.

When Dice-K comes back up, I'd like to see Bowden take the place of Penny, and Masterson head back to the 'pen. Smoltz is just another arm to add to the puzzle in mid June. Bard is there and can help. Kris Johnson can neutralize lefties. Christ, put in a call to El Guapo's agent, and see if he can still throw. Page Bryce Florie. Send a text to Hipolito Pichardo. I don't care, just get rid of Lopez!

Oh Zach, please don't even go there. You are obviously not a Red Sox fan...Not only have me [and a lot of others] hated Lugo/Lopez from the beggining but Lugo is going to conitnue to make those errors, and Lopez is going to continue to flat out suck. I am not going to hang anyone from breaking the streak that didn't deserve it, I know players make mistakes but we should have had that game the whole time. All of the others players who could have been responsible for ending the streak have made it up with their bats or their pitching, so it's alright and it would not have bothered me at all but those were routine plays ruined by players who are terrible, and it cost us. Sure it's only one win they cost us, but it will be a lot more throughout the season if we don't get them off the team.

Ct Sox Fan - His velocity is there but his command is pretty off...Francona said he would give him a couple more starts and then go from there. I think we will see Bowden/Buchholz in the rotation sooner than you think...

baseballguy350 - Do you think they will call up Bard anytime soon??

People have hated Lugo and Lopez since they put on a sox uniform. Bard has a major league fastball, but his secondary stuff is still a bit off. I wouldn't expect him up until the all star break at the earliest. I think the sox are trying to hang onto Penny until Smoltz is ready, but he is not giving Francona much help with that decision.

If the R Sox won that game, this thread wouldn't even exist. Right?

So Francona finally used Lopez correctly tonight in mop up duty. That doesn't mean he wasn't terrible. His line:

1/3 IP, 4H, 5ER, 1BB, 25 pitches of which 11 were strikes. ERA now at 9.39
