The sad state of bowman base cards

So a friend comes in the store today w an 800 bx filled with 20-30 of each top prospect from bowman draft (except bichette).

I'm talking 20+each of starling, bauer, bundy, nimmo, cron, bradley etc.

He couldn't get anyone to spend $40 for all of them!

In the end I bought the box minus all the nimmo cards for $20.

Thats how far base prospect cards have fallen in demand.

Am I the only person that actually really enjoys the look of the base Bowman cards (at least this years)? I was also a big fan of '02 base.

At least the base and/or chrome cards have a chance of obtaining some value...It's better than most brands where the base cards are just commons...

However, I think we've come a long way since the days of the 03 BDP Ryan Howard and the 02 BDP Jeff Francoeur....

All good players have a bowman chrome auto eventually whether it's in the same year or the next year or two....

I think they should really not make bowman chrome autos of certain guys once they have a bowman chrome card...It really hurts the base card value....A good example is Dante Bichette Jr. who's chrome is selling well, with blue refs in the $20 range but they'd be much higher but everyone knows eventually Bichette Jr. will have a bowman chrome auto and the base non-autos will have very little value unless he becomes HUGE

As a whole, yep, they aren't overly valuable. But timing is everything. I was getting $4-$5 each for Buster Posey's for a while as well.

Exactly, it wasn't long ago when Heyward base chrome were going for $20 a piece.

Not that every one will reach that price, but at least if you can hang on to them when a guy gets called up and becomes a house hold name, you can get a decent buck for them

Dallas Braden brought in some cash, just another example. I had a huge stack of bowman and chromes that I unloaded for a decent chunk of change after his no-no

Base Bowman (especially NON-Draft base Bowman) has never gotten anywhere near the love they deserved since the 90's

They're mass produced, what do you expect? If a guy throws a no hitter, they will get some love. Other than that, they are good for selling in bulk, getting IP autos, or giving away. Maybe sets if u have enough

We've reached a time where Chrome RC's are worth close to nothing since we all know they'll produce an autographed version a year later (if they have not already.) If that's the case with Chrome, the base Bowman's have no chance of any real value.

It's a real shame, but it's an area that formerly offered value that Topps killed by producing second, third etc. year autographs.

got this for $12 on ebay and was happy with the price. I happen to have a fondness for non-chrome, probably because I grew up collecting in the late 1980s (I still have a closet full of 1989-1991 Donruss and Fleer baseball cards).

I'd certainly pay a premium for a pristine...

Anyone who passed on that deal was stupid and knows nothing about the value of that set and base card lots. That's an easy 5X-10X ROI at $20. I moved 30 cases worth of 2011 BDP base lots in 20ct and 30ct and I can tell you that deal is a no brainer. I'd have grabbed that in an instant.

I wish Topps would leave the gold bordered base cards in hobby packs. The gold bordered base makes for a nice set and it takes some work to put it together.

I agree with this. The problem is there are so many uneducated people out there (not referring to the OP) that if these cards are marketed correctly to the group of collectors that buy these types of cards, a good chunk of money can be made. Everyone just assumes that the paper cards are worthless, but that is just not the case.

It's amazing that people still don't realize that the bowman base cards can represent the best ROI when a player gets hot.

Unfortunately, the demand for bowman base is essentially very limited to propectors/speculators who have the patience to sit on shoeboxes worth of cards, waiting for that one guy in the entire box to get hot - very few "collectors" have that discipline today, as most "collectors" are flippers needing that quick buck.
