The Vlads on Sportlots are priced $8/$12 for the base platinum and $20 for the red platinum. I paid $1.99 base / $2.99 red for the platinums last night. There was a Thome base platinum in the set breakup that sold last night - it went for $5.99. All platinums are numbered out of /199.

Silly question here I'm sure but do the red platinums exist for all players or just some? Does Frank Thomas have a red platinum parallel to the base platinum?

Topps HD had a 120 card base set, but the last 20 cards were short-printed 1 in 6 packs and were referred to as Superstars. They have the color background, what I referred to as the red. Thomas was not one of the superstars, listed below (who therefore each have two cards in the set)

101 Pedro Martinez
102 Randy Johnson
103 Greg Maddux
104 Sammy Sosa
105 Mark McGwire
106 Ivan Rodriguez
107 Mike Piazza
108 Chipper Jones
109 Vladimir Guerrero
110 Alex Rodriguez
111 Ken Griffey, Jr.
112 Cal Ripken, Jr.
113 Derek Jeter
114 Barry Bonds
115 Nomar Garciaparra
116 Jeff Bagwell
117 Todd Helton
118 Darin Erstad
119 Shawn Green
120 Roberto Alomar

Anyone pick up some of the 2001 Topps HD Platinums from the set that was broken up on eBay? They're kind of hard to track down. I bought two Vlad Guerrero's. Man, someone really wanted the Bagwells - sold for more than the Jeters and Ripkens.

Yeah, sorry bout that...

Thanks, Brad. I appreciate the info on these. I'm surprised Thomas wasn't considered a Superstar in 2001.

Ouch. The Glaus went for $1.99; it's a hard enough one to find that one of the other big time Glaus collectors doesn't even have it. The only thing that makes me feel better about missing it is that for most of the duration of the auction, I was dealing with a post-surgery medication allergy that could have potentially killed me. I feel like that's a reasonable excuse to miss out on a tough PC card.

Little side project for me... every Topps Gold serial numbered card of Vladimir Guerrero. Only took 45 days to assemble all 29. Cards range from 2001-2012, kinda cool that Vlad had a Topps Gold card every year they did these, and to see them all together. Thought it was dumb Topps stopped doing these - I liked the continuity from year to year.

Maybe I'm crazy (actually, pretty likely I am!), but when did Topps stop producing Golds? I see them in '13, '14 and '15, so looks like it's never stopped. Very cool set to assemble though, it's nice to have something that's run so continuously!

I'm the idiot. I thought they stopped them when the gold sparkle parallels appeared, but I'm wrong. Getting goofy in my old age. And stopped buying new wax around then - so I need to brush up on the last 5 years of Topps.

Was going through all my GU and cataloging swatch colors, and I was reminded how awesome the early 00's Fleer GU sets were. Different swatch colors, awesome patches, these are what modern GU should be:

Oh man, I forgot the insert sets had gold refractors too. Now I have to find the Gold Gems and Counterparts refractors for my Vlad refractor collection. Just picked up his Gold base card refractor last week on COMC. That Gems card looks great with the gold ball diamond!

nice, well done. great price - people often don't know how rare these are because of the lack of a serial number. those GEMs are crazy rare. i picked up mine on eBay about 4 years ago for about 3x what you paid, and I don't even care for the PSA registry!

I still need the base and GEM gold refractor Pedro Martinez cards...
