Now that you have found success, with some help from Theo, you are uppity and arrogant. It is truly funny.

Realistic fans give some credit to Dan Duquette. Theo inherited Manny, Pedro, Varitek, Lowe, Youkilis, and Damon. That is a strong nucleus to build from. It's not like there was nothing there. It's documented that the Red Sox only signed Ortiz as a favor to Pedro Martinez and they got lucky there. Theo wanted Jeremy Giambi over Ortiz and coveted him. He did well with some signings like Millar, as well as Mueller. Anyone in Baseball would have taken Schilling in 2004.

He had a strong organization that just needed a little boost to get over the top, Francona held the team together and deserves as much credit as anyone.

If Theo can take the nucleus of the Cubs and win, then that is a tremendous accomplishment.

Agreed. Theo is definitely not walking into the same situation with the Cubs. A few key pieces to build on, but no real nucleus. This is going to be a much bigger project. Will he have the same budget to work with?

I do agree that he had plenty to work with. There is credit to go around, no doubt about it, I agree. BUT, many GM's have a lot to work with. It certainly doesn't mean that a title is inevitable. The Red Sox had a lot to work with for years and never won a title. Same could be said for other teams like the Braves, Angels, Dodgers, on and on. People are also talking about the young men, like Cherington, Hoyer, etc. Were these people not hired by Theo? Any good boss surrounds himself with people SMARTER than himself. Not quite sure how you can fault him for that.

skrip

Again most of the people in the office were hired by Duquette. Theo, and Cherington were, and John Henry brought in Jed Hoyer when the ownership group took over.

So Theo, as the GM, chose none of the people around him? Is that correct? I find that very hard to believe.[/quote:l4hi68rc]

He chose some around him but the main names that are referenced were with the organization before he was hired in late 2002. Hoyer and Cherington were the ones who brought in Beckett and Lowell. Amiel (Andrew's boy) Sawdaye was there before Theo was GM, and he is in charge of the draft now. You can find it hard to believe, but the top names through the team have been there before his tenure as GM.[/quote:l4hi68rc]

Beefy, I believe. I guess I am more surprised than anything else. What is the story with when Theo left for a few months and the Hanley trade went down? Was he still actually in the mix? Or did the trade 100% go down wtihout any thoughts/consent/work done by THeo?

skrip[/quote:l4hi68rc]

Everything has always said that Theo would not have made that trade.

(Might as well post it in this thread too) :)

I am not in Boston, but am a fan since the age of 5. I have ZERO problem with Theo or Francona leaving. When its time, its time. No ill will, no resentment whatsoever. If you look at the actual life aspects of some of these moves there is just no reason to get upset. I will always have high regard for Theo and Tito, but if they want to leave and feel that their lives are improved in doing so, then I wish them nothing but the best. There are more elements to consider in decisions such as these than what is played out on the field imho.

The sox have stated they want $$...not players.
Ben Cherington is the front runner right now to be the next GM.

Don't have a clue what you mean by that but Its how the world is. Just wait..If the Cubs ever win anything..their fans will be the same way. Its sad but its just how it is.

I don't know what is tough to understand

Pre-Theo - Didn't win crap, fans were begging for a winner, were Yankees little stepchild, etc

THEO BRINGS 2 TITLES TO BOSTON

Post-Theo - We don't need Theo, we are better than that, uppity, arrogant, "red sox nation", "we are better than the yankees", etc etc

Win a bit and damn people get VERY arrogant.

skrip

i would not say i feel entitled. i would however say that theo doesnt just get a free pass for just happening to be the sox gm won we actually broke the curse and won 2 WS. Some people may give him the pass, but with the moves he has made over the years, i am sorry, he is just not that great of a gm.

Interesting.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few seasons.

I'd say that Terry Francona will soon follow suit.

And then Papelbon as well.

Wonder how much money he's going to have to work with?

This off season will be very interesting. Over $50 million coming off the books with Silva, Aramis, Kosuke, Pena, and others off the books. He will have a ton to work with.

I was wondering what bad contract will be his first one. Because I think we all know there's one coming, haha.

Guys like cashman and Epstein are given unlimited bankrolls. They are given entirely too much credit. Give those guy avg bankrolls and then judge them. Its all funny and im a Yankees fan. How hard can it be.

As a Red Sox fan I appreciate what Theo did and believe he will eventually have success with the Cubs. With that said his time in Boston was up. Given the collapse this year and the nonsense that lead to it, as well as a string of brutal contracts, it was clear he needed a fresh start.

Nomar is right. Boston is all about the Smear Campaign. I've been saying it for ever.

Whenever a player leaves he is always degraded by the fans. Now the manager is getting the same treatment from the management.

You mean Larry's puppet? Any GM they sign is not going to have anywhere near the power that Theo had. Larry Lucchino and Theo butted heads quite often and who knows how many times Larry's opinion won over Theo's on deals?

With that said, I don't blame Theo for leaving. Either he or Larry had to go. No way the 2 could continue to work together.

Should have known you wouldn't miss your opportunity to rip on Boston in this thread. With little actual knowledge I might add. Yankee turds like yourself are the reason Red Sox fans have such a hatred for you.

What exactly was Nomar right about? He was traded because he was becoming a cancer crying about his contract extension and he couldn't stay healthy. How many great seasons did he have after leaving Boston? There was no smear campaign, what was said in the media was the truth. If anything, Nomar started a smear campaign about Boston to make him look better.
