I'm not sure there are as many serious modern collectors - or even semi-serious collectors - as there were cards released in 2010 alone. I'm thinking not.

too few collectors and too many "investors"... half the people who buy cards, whether its baseball or another sport, probably dont know what they're looking at. they are in it to make money and not enjoy the HOBBY. remember its not a job, its a hobby. i admit i sell cards so i can reinvest the money into my collections. i sell duplicates and cards i dont collect only.

I would like to try my hand at prospecting but it's not going to replace my collections. I will probably use the money I make (if I make any) to pump better singles in my collection.

I'm not sure there are as many serious modern collectors - or even semi-serious collectors - as there were cards released in 2010 alone. I'm thinking not.

Interesting to note that these numbers are down from:
263,004 different cards
and
3,794 different sets
issued in 2005.

pretty sure you're loooking at sub-sets there

but as I've said before, there obviously have not been enough cards releeased the last few years,
because myself, and several other members here, have not bought any "new" cards over that time.

Not enough cards or not enough cards that are desirable? Gotta be the latter. Or is there more to it than that? Seems to me that prospectors have plenty to keep themselves busy, the rest of us get base Topps (which even with multiple series has too small of a checklist) and a couple of uninspired retro releases as afterthoughts.

edit to add: I did not factor Triple Threads or Tribute and the like into this assessment. The "high end" sets are for gamblers and thrill seekers, not intended for the every day collector

and see how FEW patches Topps has made this year. Most are manufactured, and very few of the GU are available under $30. They have totally priced themselves out of the everyday collector, or kid who wants a patch of his/her favorite player.

There are very few patches coming out of GQ, some in Tribute, very few in Heritage (where I MUST remind everyone it is a $2 pack, not a $500 pack), almost nothing in S1.....

Base Topps and Heritage are certainly highly collectible, they've both had some GREAT looking cards this year, can offer good return for those that do rip and flip, and I honestly think Topps has made some good moves this year with both sets. I've got some hope for the future even if it doesn't sound that way :lol:

Over the last few years there have been well over a quarter million different cards and three thousand different sets. Seems plain that some people are in the wrong hobby if they can't find something they like with that many cards issued. Some people outgrow the hobby I guess.

Or it could be a case of just plain and simple hating Topps cards.
Boring cards and impossible odds, that pretty much sums up Topps products for me.
I buy more football cards than baseball anymore, and it's never been that way for me up until the last year or Two.
