I know this is not an exact science, but I have been a catcher magnet over the last couple of years. I know this is a tough position to prospect, but can be low risk big reward, especially if the catcher is athletic.

#1 Carlos Santana
#2 Jesus Montero
#3 Buster Posey
#4 Jason Castro
#5 Tyler Flowers
#6 Wilson Ramos
#7 Derek Norris
#8 J. P. Arencibia
#9 Austin Romine
#10 Luis Exposito [might be stretching this one, but had to throw in a personal prospect]

Thoughts?

I would have put Posey above Montero, as the former has a much better chance of staying behind the plate.

probably right. wishful thinking on my part that expo a top 10, but at the bottom of the list it's tougher. JP probably right on the Posey/Montero flip-flop.

What is the basis....

Projection?

Statistics?

Combination of Projection/Statistics probably a 50/50 break, but you know there is the prospect hype potential that is factored in there.

The the prospect hype potential is put in there then Montero would be rated #1 out of the sheer volume of hype he'd receive if he stays at the position going to the NY Yankees! (IMO, you've got it right in term's of Montero over Posey & it is also debatable that he be swapped out with C.Santana for the #1 spot). :D

Sanchez quickly moving up the list - I have Posey #1 as well.

I am a diehard Giant fan and I have major concerns with Posey's defense. I did not panic when he was struggling in Hawaii last winter, but he looked lost trying to block balls in the dirt during his short stint with the big club this year. The scouting reports I've read from the AFL say that he is having difficulty with balls in the dirt there too. He had two passed balls in his first two games and would have had a few more had there been men on base. I'm not saying he won't figure it out I just think that he needs much more seasoning and is not to start everyday in SF. Giant fans get ready for more Molina.

I'd take some blocking difficulties over running/walking difficulties for Molina :|

I've never been a big fan of ranking someone based on a future position change. If you do that, you might as well not even include them on the list since they are supposed to switch positions. Having said that, Montero would be my number 1. Until the Yankee officially make the switch, and so far there hasn't been the slightest hint that they indeed will, I'll stick with it.

I know he didn't have as good a year as last, but did anyone forget Angel Salome?
Just curious.
