My wife surprised me with a jumbo box last night...guess she was tired of me whining about this promotion and wanting to try more :P

Not sure if there are "hot" Topps boxes, but each jumbo pack gave on average 10-15 insert cards and 1-3 of the redemption cards. Ended up with 19 in the 10 packs, plus 3 others I had sitting around from retail. I entered a few when the promotion started and got a 1954 Paul Leslie Smith and a bunch of 65's and 67's. Holding off on the ones I got last night until the run of 79/80's ends...not too pleased with how they are falling lately. Would hope they go back to something a little more random soon.

They aren't random. I believe it's been said that the numbers are predetermined... otherwise EVERYONE would just wait until the "run is up."

Maybe the "runs" are predetermined but the numbers sure aren't...I see no way I can pull redemptions from a Target in Illinois, a Wal-Mart in Missouri, a hobby jumbo from Blowoutcards.com and a jumbo from a local hobby shop and have all the codes give back '79 and '80 cards. Looks as if this run is going on for everyone right now, so waiting for the run to be up seems like a logical choice.

What does the location have to do with the card redeemed? Despite where the card is pulled, the majority of cards are going to be from a certain era. I guarantee you that no matter how long you wait, you will get the same card then as you would now. Each code is tied to a card. Seriously -- if it were random and you thought the bulk of the "mass produced" cards would be the ones to go first then everyone would just wait.

This is simply not true.

The codes are NOT tied to specific cards and everything that is redeemed is solely affected by WHEN you enter the code.

How so? In the same sense that slot machines run on timers? Whereas it can come down to the moment when you enter it making a difference from second to second?

Either way, if that were the case, then despite how long you hold your redemption you are still going to run the same odds. I doubt there will ever be a point where you'll have better odds of hitting a chase or early 50's card.

Interesting. That's really all assumption, though, and it's lack of real "randomness" is not explained by there not being real randomness sometimes. Anyone who works with automated random number generators knows that there is oftentimes a formula that can be found regarding what numbers generate. It's a weird concept, but it's been speculated that there is no randomness at all when working with programmed algorithms. I wouldn't wait, though, because no ratio calculated by anyone is to say what -- in the end -- the final tally is going to be for each year.

To elaborate on that last statement:

If Topps were to give a final and total ratio of every year offered in relation to the total amount being released, then you could use current trends to predict what a future sequence may be. Without knowing even a general range of what the ratios will be in relation to the total number of cards, though, you're always going to be left hoping they start spurting more multiples of better cards... in the end, you're still going to be competing with people for them.

That makes sense Adam, but the code card website has recently unlocked cards on the main page, and it's looked like this all day:

1979 Buddy Bell 02.24.10
1980 Cecil Cooper 02.24.10
1979 Silvio Martinez 02.24.10
1980 Bob Apodaca 02.24.10
1979 Don Hood 02.24.10
1979 Bob watson 02.24.10
1980 Dan Meyer 02.24.10
1979 Jim Kern 02.24.10
1980 Sparky Lyle 02.24.10
1980 Hosken Powell 02.24.10

All I'm saying is, I will probably have 5 or 6 cards later today, and those will most likely be the only ones I redeem during this
entire promotion. I have ZERO intention of redeeming them today when all anyone has gotten are 79 & 80 cards.

Finally got some codes to redeem - probably should have waited, due to the recent trend.
Couldn't resist at least putting one code in though, ended up with this.

This is still wrong in relationship to this promotion topps is running. Adam, if you have been following along, then you'd know that Topps is now releasing the cards in waves by year. They are taking two years and mixing it up, primarily from those two years. They did 73 and 75s, then filtered those out while heavily releasing 79s and 80s. Looking at the release ratios, you can see a trend and a pattern to what they are doing. While I agree there is no way of knowing the actual # of cards Topps has to release for each year, you absolutely can look at the trends and see what the company is doing to manipulate the distribution of the cards. And I am 100% positive that is exactly what they are doing. The redemption cards are NOT tied to a particular card. No way, no how.

Basically, Topps gave out a lot of the early year stuff up front to stir interest and boy did they do that in combination with pushing the promotion through various outlets, including bringing on Cal Ripken Jr. to talk it up all over the TV and in newspapers. Now, they are settling in and just giving out the cards in a semi-random fashion. This is much different than a random number generator or "chance". That's not to say that the next card entered can't unlock a 55 Ted Williams. It could. But if you have 20 cards and you enter them all right now, I'd bet a $1000 in a heartbeat that the majority of them will net you 1979 and 1980 singles. So, the smart guy is holding his 20 cards (or 100 or 1000) until they start noticing a different turn of events in what Topps is releasing. The only way to do that is to check the site regularly throughout the day and see what's being given out.

For me, the hardest part of it all is the curiousity over the "Prize" cards, of which there are 2000, according to Topps, not me, that are the really good singles. They are doing nothing to promote what those 2000 are, have provided no list, and are not responsive to questions about this. There is no real way to look at what they have released from these, other than going through a list of 165K + cards that have been released so far and guessing what would constitute a prize card. I'd imagine the 54 Topps Teddy Ballgame is one of them, along with several Mantles they given out.

Edit - oh, and not everyone would wait b/c not everyone is smart enough to think it through and see what is really going on. They are too eager to pump that redemption code into the machine and see what they got, figuring they might get a big money card, even though a review of the board over the last 24 hours will show you they aren't giving out a single card from the 50's or 60's. At least if I saw that, I'd be dropping some code cards into the redemption box. But 79's and 80's all last night and all of today - give me a break. Topps needs to do something to break it up a bit!

One has to give Topps great credit for being transparent with what has been redeemed. Also remember that although many people HERE may not be interested in ANYTHING other than a money card, that's not the case for most anyone else.

To be fair, Topps shouldn't have to make their redemption program completely random, additionally they didn't have to hold it at all. Besides, I've wondered why Topps doesn't make sure cards that are of greatest local interest aren't always sent to said local market.

The idea from Topps' perspective is for people to have fun with the program, and as a private entity they're entitled to make a couple bucks from it as well.

So Bill...what do you think these "Card Unavailable" cards are?

I have a 1956, like your two 1952s.
