Boy, that's confusing. There's an insert called "Cards Your Mom Threw Out" and on the Topps Million Card website, it states "We're giving you back the cards your mom threw out".

I'm interested in the fact that you can keep the cards in you online portfolio and trade them online

you know eTopps has been very profitable for Topps and I've wondered when there would be copycats popping up eUpperDeck.com

This isn't really that similar to etopps. I mean yea, similar in the fact that you can "store" cards in your portfolio, but the distribution method is what really made/makes etopps popular and profitable for both Topps and buyers.

Who would actually take the chance on buying one of those redemption cards? What are the odds of getting a Topps base card worth more than $15? I would have prefered Topps to just pack them out

Do you think this seller got lucky by preselling these for $29.99, or do you actually see these holding that kind of value?

I assume once people start redeeming them and finding out that a majority of the cards aren't worth the paper they are printed on, let alone $10-30 for the redemption, the price will start dropping.

I assume that they didn't pack them out because not all Topps cards were the same size that the cards are now.

not just store but also trade

I've always felt thepit.com could learn from eTopps on that one.

On a side note when my wife complains I have too many cards coming in the mail I just switch to eTopps
she is none the wiser

Also I don't have insurance on my collection, house burns down and either I'm dead or out $$$ (or both)
keeping all your cards in an online port keeps the monster boxes out of the attic

Yeah, but what % of the cards aren't the standard size? 2%? 5%? They could have packed out the other 95%-98% and done redemptions for the bigger ones. And those might actually be worth buying a redemption... or maybe not.

From what I recall reading, the Million Card giveaway is literally one of every card published from 1951-2009.

That being said, I expect them to have 'buyback' embossing on the cards themselves.

They may actually use EVERY set produced, including the oddball / foreign / other stuff. We'll have to s ee.

I don't see any difference between buying a redemption or buying a box - either way you're likely to loose money, probably about twenty bucks.

Would you really want a 52 Mantle with embossing on it?

Good point. But would you want an '86 Dawson without it? If these end up like the O-Pee-Chee buybacks then even more of them are worthless. It'd be nice if they had Beckett encase and label the higher value ones and stamp the rest

I was also thinking these would just be Topps base set cards but 58 years of that would still come in under 45,000 cards so it'll be interesting to see what else they give out or if they'll give out 1 '52 Mantle for every 10,000 '87 Bryan Clutterbucks, etc.

They did this in 2001 also. They packed out most of the cards though. The cards that were in beckett for $100+ were the only redemptions. I pulled this from a pack of Series 2:

I also pulled a redemption for a 1953 Topps Enos Slaughter 2 months after the card expired and they sent it back  .

The cards were not embossed though. They were just regular cards. Now in 2002-2003? they did this and embossed them to different quantities. I believe they are called "Vintage Embossed". This isn't the first time they are doing this, but if they are embossed and are 1/1's, this may be better if you are lucky enough to get some vintage cards.

For almost all of these buybacks its obvious that Topps' intention wasn't so that people could flip them for extra cash. Maybe this offends some of the hobby 'elite' here, but most people simply enjoy the nostalgia of older Topps cards.

I understand what you're saying, but me personally I was hoping for more rare stuff to hunt down as a player collector, that's why I'd like to see it ;)
