I think the fact remains...since day one it was known that Razor was backed by someone/something. And we moved on.

This old news simply implies that the "silent partner" is now known. And we will move on.

Upper Deck will move on, and Razor will move on...and both may move on without baseball, but both will probably still release products that will interest people.

If you need to resort to calling names, that's fine. The 1st ::facepalm:: was because this had already been discussed previously.........in this same thread.

Is there some kind of blockade on UD creating a prospect set equivalent to Razor? Why not just have UD Sig Series? Was it simply to shroud the product in mystery? I'm quite confident a UD Sig Series would have outsold Razor tenfold.

The MLBPA.

I find it hard to believe, especially with the release of this memo, that the MLBPA had no information regarding UD owning Razor. Simply using Razor as a front was enough to avoid the MLBPA's wrath? I'm not sure who that says more about, UD or the MLBPA.

The memo pretty much said they speculated but did not have proof. At this point, no information has been released on how the MLBPA will be handling the situation.
So again ::facepalm:: :lol:

Here's what I think. Razor has absolutely NO obligation to inform us where they get the money to support their business. So when asked if they were backed by Upper Deck, I would not expect them to be up-front about it, because it's really none of our business. The only thing that should matter to us is the quality of the product they release.

+10000

This in no way should hurt the Razor name, in fact it should enhance it. This news could potentially catalyze a new interest in the Razor brand because people will in fact be buying a Razor/UD card.

Here is my question, why is it that Upper Deck couldn't do the same thing that Razor did with the exclusives? Sign a bunch of these guys and release a non MLB licensed product featuring college/high school jerseys? Forget the fact that they can't make licensed first year cards such as Topps. This would be completely different and wouldn't violate any rules with the MLBPA (I am assuming). Were the minor league products produced by UD from 1993-1997 (Upper Deck Minors, SP Top Prospects, etc.) MiLB licensed?

I am pretty sure they could but the MLBPA does not want them to do that and I would be willing to bet that they threatened to take away UD's license if they did. So instead of going directly against the MLBPA and risk losing their license they decided to covertly fund Razor. But the MLBPA caught them (hence the memo they sent out) and are most likely deciding what to do about the situation. Which I think will be to drop UD and then Topps will stand alone as sole MLB manufacturer.

Thanks for answering the question in a non asswhole fashion. :D

Oh the MMA fighter that doesn't have a company to fight with anymore? Oh well... Sorry to spoil the UD/Razor fodder..

~AJ

I think you mean the one MMA fighter I would LOVE to train jiu jitsu with.

She can put me in her guard any day of the week. :D HeHe

Yeah that one. To bad she won't be on tv anymore..Just heard that Kimbo will be on Ultimate Fighter trying to get a UFC contract.. WHY.. WHY.. WHY.. Does he really need to get his ass kicked again on national television? Does he think he can beat Mir or Lesnar? LOL.. What a joke..

But yeah she is a bad bad girl...

~AJ

Hate to derail a thread, but it seems to be going nowhere.

Gina will be back on TV, mark my words. Either Strikeforce will have her fight Cyborg, or she will get out of that contract and WEC will pick her up to start a select women's division. It was rumored, but the EliteXC stuff made it complicated.

Kimbo going on TUF 10 is possibly the best thing for MMA in a LONG time. Never been a huge Kimbo fan, but I have tyo respect him shocking everyone and standing up to show Dana White he has cajones. If he wins, he will be in a legit fighting organization, where we can truly test him, and if he loses then Dana White was 100% correct.

It will be VERY entertaining to watch.

Why can't they? Because MLB doesn't want them to. Yes, the MILB products produced by UD, starting with the 1991 UD Minor set, was licensed by MiLB.

TUF 10 is scheduled to premiere September 16th, directly following UFC Fight Night 19.

There you go.

I learned of the Razor/UD "rumor" after asking a buddy of mine, that is well connected in this hobby about Razor, right around the time that the news of Razor entering the prospect market broke.

Clearly it wasn't a rumor. It was factual and had made its way around well connected and in-the-know players in this hobby VERY early on.

I really don't understand how this move by Upper Deck is shady...
Even the argument that Brian denying this rumor was a shady move is a weak argument. Clearly he wasn't at a liberty to confirm this rumor and silence would have equated to an admission.

Even those who view this as a negative deal needs to understand that this is simply a result of one the MOST negative part of this hobby....the MLBPA granting a RC Monopoly to Topps. How the MLBPA still can't see that this is a terrible move and costs them greatly in revenue department is beyond me.

Look at the following years:
2001
2003
2005

I don't really need to go into a lot of detail on 2001 but Ichiro and Pujols drove product and anything numbered from ANY company of those 2 have sold and still sell very well. Sure Delmon and Rickie haven't quite turned out how they were supposed to, but there for a about a 3 year stretch both of these player's RC's from ANY company sold and sold very well. If fact the Delmon SPx auto's were his most saught after base RC. 2005 was a weird mix, I don't remember all the details but you can't tell me that the UD RC's of some of the young stars of today aren't a staple in any of their player collector's collection or in the collections of RC collectors.

I personally don't care how the MLBPA swings it...whether its ANY company can make RC's as soon as a player signs with a ML team(I'd prefer this)....OR that ANY company can make RC's in the 1st year that a player makes the 25 man roster.

Until that happens, the RC will be a mess, the hobby's producers will struggle, and retail sales of wax will be less than what it could be. Essentially...Everyone who participates in this hobby....the Players, MLB, the card companies, and we, the collectors, are participating in a weaker hobby than it should be, and if the proper decision would be made; it could be great again.

I'm just a pee-on, but I've been collecting since 1986, I managed a baseball card shop for 5.5 years (before, during, and after college), I'm still a part of the hobby, and I talk to others that are much deeper into this hobby on a regular basis and I really don't think I'm off base with my thoughts and opinions.

This whole thing really is funny....

I remember Jeff getting MURDERED on these boards when he brought up the Upper Deck and Razor talk.

If it is not a big deal now, then why did so many care to butcher Jeff then?

I came back from my local card with the same rumor and got smacked around all over, from many different board members. Claiming it was hearsay and that I was bashing the brand etc.

Hmmmmm, I guess we have all forgot about those threads. It is called eating crow boys, enjoy it.

Who was the person that created the Razor/UD card? Didn't they almost get suspended over it?

1) I bought Razor because I was cheering for the new guy / underdog (aka "Rudy")

2) I witnessed some= threatened to be banned or at least ripped on big time for suggesting UD and Razor = connected

3) I still pick up Razor stuff that fits a need (ie picking up stuff for Odorizzi family, picked up JWeeks stuff for buddy)

4) I will not buy any more after the whole Sig Series /Metal thing

5) BG seemed fine whenever he communicated with me and I wish him the best but I can see how he rubs some the wrong way.

6) I do not like the fact that there was such denial about UD-Razor connection, when, according to the blog it was factual.

7) If people want to discuss this...let them! The thread shouldn't be side-tracked with wresting, UFC, etc stuff intentionally. It might sound like old news to some but if discussing this interests some, let them!

Should be interesting conversations at the National

Honestly, I had no clue about any of this. So this blog's contents may be old to most, but was news to me. Thanks!

Wow, I had no idea about this either. I was gone for four months and had zero access to this site because of the wonderful firewall blocking it. When I left in January Razor was one of the sponsor's here and now they are nowhere to be found.

Punk Rock Paint created it, I posted it on my blog, someone posted it here.

I posted it...and was advised to remove it. So I did.

I remember that one, looked like 07 Elements. But someone took a Razor Signature Series and put tin foil and UD logos on it.

It's HERE. Me and a friend of mine threw this together as a joke to poke fun of the way Razor was cutting up Upper Deck auto cards and calling them their own. In hindsight, the card makes more sense now than ever. But at the time, Razor was a sponsor and some people took offense to the Upper Deck logo being on the card.

This was also news to me.
Nothing suprises me anymore when it comes to this industry.
Look around the room next time you are at a big show and you will see alot of scumbags there screwing the average Joe out of their money. They are easily identifiable by their slicked back hair and Mr. T starter kits. I can't feel sorry for these Joes that are getting screwed because they should know what they are doing, but let's be honest guys, there are alot of shady characters in this industry. No wonder athletes are wanting a ton of money to sign their names on cards or other items these days. They see these same guys everyday.
