Brian Cashman says otherwise said:Without question, he is significantly improved this year as opposed to last year to the point that we don't really doubt he's going to be a catcher in the big leagues.
And Giants aren't, most of our first round draft picks dating back to the late 1980s have been pitching lol. except for like posey haha and fairleypujolsjunkie said:Purke is the guy I'll be watching the closest. He's going to make whoever takes him very happy. As I said in another thread, Detroit appears to be a good fit, as they're aggressive with young pitchers historically. I see validity to him being selected just as high as you listed, by the O's.

1. Player comes from a well off family
2. Scholarship to play football with a coach that said he can play baseball also
3. Top 10 selection
4. Scott Boras
5. Early reports that Boras will be seeking a MLB contract for Tate
6. Tate, Ackley, and Green all have Boras has a client.
If I am Seattle, I take Tate, Green, or Ackley based on who looks the best on that last weekend workout and who looks like they would report to camp the quickest.

2005- Rays invite Andruw McClutchen, Craig Hansen, and Wade Townsend the weekend before the draft. Scouting department wants McClutchen due to his workout performance, Hansen workout is better then Townsend but his asking price is higher, meanwhile Townsend's workout was 1st at 6am. Those that observed the workout at the Naomi Complex had a hard time keeping a straight face when Townsend topped out in the mid 80's. The main reason the Rays selected Townsend was because the Ray owner only saw Townsend's performance and the two parties had already agreed on a contract. The only thing that held up the announcement was that MLB frowns above pre-draft deals and both parties couldn't agree on how the contract.
This Rays tidbit was going to part of a Rays book about how absurd Rays management was the 1st 10 years but never saw print. I also had a discussion with McClutchen about it that year in year instructs because he thought he was going to be a Ray. I read a rough draft of the 1st 100 pages of the book that covered the Rays drafting philosophy and the clashes the scouting department had with ownership. The book also covered the humerous exchanges between the Rays owner and Josh Beckett's 2 hour visit to his house.
Another one was also in 2005:
Braves invite Colby Rasmus, Jacob Ellsbury, and Craig Hansen into camp. If you ask Joey Devine, he didn't even workout for the Braves before being drafted. His selection was base due the following: Braves did not think Rasmus would last to them so his workout was short after Rasmus informed them that he had already been in Boston for a workout. Plus, Rasmus's workout did not impress the Braves vs Ellsbury's. The Braves never discussed contract demands with Rasmus. Hansen asking price was to high for the Braves. Fast forward. Braves are in a pennant race but AOL Time Warner Inc has informed GM Jon that they will not be able to take on any expensive contracts for bullpen help. Flashforward 3 days before draft day, a cluster of Braves are sent to watch Devine's last college performance in the ACC tourney. On draft day, Braves scouting department is is told to come to a conclusion on the best arm that will be ready the quickest and can help out in Sep. Braves board was set up like this : Hansen, Devine, and JB Cox. Cox was the backup if Devine was selected before he got to the Braves, Hansens was who everybody wanted in the Braves scouting department but his contract demands were to high, and Devine was thus picked due to his low contract demands. Braves were hoping that Devine could help the Braves in that years postseason. Braves scouts wanted Jacoby Ellsbury due to his workout and had Hansen over Devine even after watching Devine's last pitching performance. The Braves informed Rasmus's dad that their plan was to grab him in the 1st Supp Round with pick #41 if he was still on the board. Money was the deciding factor in the selection of Devine..
