Urban Meyer - Hired as New OSU Head Coach

Urban Meyer is coming back to coaching and joining beleaguered Ohio State, ESPN reported Monday.

The sports network did not cite a source for its report, but Meyer worked for ESPN the past year.

Meyer won two national championships in six years as the coach at Florida. He left the Gators a year ago, citing health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family. Now, the 47-year-old Ohioan will be returning to his roots by becoming coach of a Buckeyes team facing NCAA problems.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith did not immediately respond to a request for comment. No announcement has been set by Ohio State, although there were reports that a team meeting set for Sunday night has been moved to Monday afternoon.

Meyer takes over a program that has been hit by several suspensions and the forced resignation of coach Jim Tressel. The Buckeyes completed a 6-6 season under interim Luke Fickell with a 40-34 loss to rival Michigan on Saturday.

In 10 seasons as a head coach — two at Bowling Green, two at Utah and six at Florida - Meyer had a 104-23 record and won three national coach of the year awards. His teams are 7-1 in bowl games, including the Gators' 41-14 victory over unbeaten and top-ranked Ohio State in the 2007 Bowl Championship Series title game.

Meyer had consistently and persistently denied all the talk surrounding him and Ohio State. Soon after Tressel was pressured to resign, Meyer said he wasn't interested in leaving ESPN, where he was a college football analyst.

"I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall," he said in a statement released the day after Tressel lost his job. Just last week he said no job had been offered to him nor was he pursuing one.

But that flew in the face of weeks of speculation that he was Ohio State's first choice to take over a program that has a glittering past but has faltered over a troublesome last 12 months.

i guess the heart problems disappeared after a year and family time is not as important anymore. I always thought Meyer was a really good coach but after his flaky resignation then coming back and then Florida's collapse I am not so sure. Florida is currently stuck with players that cant run a pro type offense thanks to Meyer.

Meyer should have even more success w/ the Buckeyes since they are better program in a weaker conference.

I always kinda liked Meyer, but now I guess he's onto the "Dislike" list!

At least maybe he'll have them stop referring to it as "THE Ohio State" University...

And he should dominate the Big 10/12/16, whatever. Maybe Zook will come in and be his #1 Recruiter. :?

Meyer is going to fail horribly at OSU....everyone including himself....thinks he's going to be able to reach into the south and recruit. :lol: Les Miles didn't take his "dream job" at Michigan because he knows that players from the south stay in the south...and the south is where all of the speed is...good luck running that wacky spread with slow players you recruit in the midwest :lol:

I disagree, I don't think he'll fail. Tressel did pretty good with those "slow players from the midewest". There's plenty of talent in Ohio and PA to pursuade them to go there and he'll still get kids from all over the country. Granted, he won't get the same amount of Florida and southern kids as he did when he was at Florida, but he'll still get a nice amount of them.

C'mon now, any kid who wants to play in MEANINGFUL games will choose OSU over Illinois every day of the week. I bet OSU wins a national chamionship in the next 5 years.

I believe OSU was going to compete for a big 10 title next year with or without Meyer. They were just too young this year with too much turmoil surrounding the team. They did about as well as I expected. Braxton Miller showed nice progression throughout the entire year and having 2011 under his belt will give him a ton of confidence heading into next season. The kid's got incredible talent. He's definately not polished, but especially toward the end of the year, I enjoyed watching him more than Terrelle Pryor. With Meyer stepping in now, it only adds to Ohio State's recruiting ability. I'll freely admit that the SEC is the best conference in college football, but I'm sick of people acting like the SEC is the NFL to the rest of the nation's NCAA. The gap will close, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Ohio State in the National Title hunt in the next few years.

success at Utah...I have no respect for the Mountain West as a conference and the only reason you have any respect for what Meyers did at Utah is because he beat your Panthers in a Bowl they shouldn't have been on the same field as Pitt that year but they rose to the occasion...more proof that the BCS is screwed...they didn't play anyone worthy of elevating them to the #6 position.

I'll give you Florida...but the only way OSU wins a National Championship in the next 5 years is if they don't play team from the SEC in the Title game...or USC. :twisted: USC will be back in the hunt for a Title (with less scholarships) faster than OSU will.

Screw OSU and the NCAA...where the hell is their sanctions???

Miller is talented...and I think he'll fit into Meyer's system well...if you compare his numbers to Tebow's (passing wise)....they're pretty similar....it's the rest of the team I'm talking about...I am no where near a fan of any team in the SEC...but I respect them....and the Big 10 hasn't shown any comparable speed in the recent past and I doubt Urban Meyer is going to be able to reach into the south's recruiting pool like everyone is expecting. I could be wrong...but a lot of these kids stay home.

I fully agree with your edit. And considering that the ones that go to Miami are the best of the bunch, that puts PA/OH ahead of the rest of the FL kids by default.

The Buckeyes have addressed their lack of speed the past couple of years and this could be seen when they faced the Ducks and the Razorbacks. Ohio St. draws top talent just like the SEC, Tressell just happened to be too conservative in big games so the offense was never really opened up. I expect Meyer to get the most out of his players b/c he's less conservative than Tressell.

I don't think Miles staying w/ LSU had anything to do w/ recruiting, rather money. This why Michigan had to settle for Hoke instead of their top 2 candidates.

USC won the South...but no thanks to the NCAA...Oregon will have a cake walk with UCLA :evil:

and there's no doubt that there is a ton of talent in the midwest...but unlike the south...they don't all stay home...everyone reaches into the midwest for talent...hell..USC does too...but everyone's banking on OSU being successful because they think Meyer has an edge on the rest of the Big 10 because they THINK he's got reach in the south. :lol:
