First card that came to my mind was 1998 Leaf Rookies and Stars J.D. Drew.........man that card was hot for the entire offseason!!!!

Todd Van Poppel Upper Deck rookie. I kick myself to this day on that one. I was 11 at the time when it came out. Everyone was buying the UD packs trying to hit it at the local shop at that time. I bought 1 pack and pulled it. I was offered $75 for it on the spot. But, being young (and stupid), I was happy to have the card...I need to send it TTM & have it signed... :lol:

Hopefully those will conjur some memories of chasing those cards when they still had card shows to go to..

Remember those super rare Elite inserts of Ryan and Sandburg in 92 Donruss..."limited" to only 5000 copies
each! You don't see those around alot.

Remember the Two for the Title card..like 85 Donruss..Mattingly/Winfield. rememeber when that was hot?

I was thinking of some older cards that were once red-hot, and have slipped off the radar from one reason or another.

The obvious one's like the 1985 Topps McGwire have been brought up in posts many times, but there were other lesser known cards that were super hot at one point in time:

A couple:

2001 Donruss Signature Roy Oswalt Auto /25 I remember when this was his only RC card, and was an absolute beast of a card.
2001 Donruss Elite Victor Martinez Think that one of these once sold for as high as $400 and they were "the card to have" for a while.

Really? He has, off the top of my head, 12 autos in 2001. Plus he has true RCs in 2000. When I started collecting him in 2003 his SPX was about a $30 card. One of the rare cases where a RC had its peak five-six years after a player had been in the league. The 2001 Donruss /25 is a tough card though. I remember I had to trade some nice cards to get one. Since I don't remember, how high were his cards in 2001/2002? Was the Donruss really the highest? Or was the 2000 BC refractor high? Or was he as underrated then as he is now?

Not true; the first case I ever bought was 00 Upper Deck Rookie Update which featured the Oswalt SPx and the Zito SPx Auto. For a while, the Zito was getting $150+ while the Oswalt hovered around $80-$100. This set also featured the likes of "can't miss" prospects like Dave Krynzel, Keith Ginter, and Geraldo Guzman!

carl pavano. when the marlins were heading towards their second title, i corraled 12 of his 96 bowman foil, his only rc for a total of less than 20.00. offseason, signed by yanks, sold the lot for 80+. it was funny cause in the auction i stated that this could be a 15.00 card and in the next beckett, lo and behold, i had predicted its peak

The Oswalt was hitting higher, especially for graded, in 2006. Some hit as high as $150, and any without a refractor line normally hit over $100. It must have dipped in 2003 though.
