My only box break ever, even to this date in over 20 years of collecting.

In 1997 I broke two boxes of 1996 Topps Series I retail. I had gotten them for free from my uncle who had originally bought it to sell at his store. He had sold a few packs but had two unopened boxes sitting around for over a year so he had given them to me because he knew I collected cards. I was 13 at the time, and we had summer reading assignments every year in middle school and I would always get baseball books to read from the local library. By that point I had read quite a bit about the history of baseball, especially in New York during the golden period of the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants. My favorite book was "Five O'Clock Lightning: Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle and the Glory Years of the NY Yankees" by Tommy Henrich.

These books always pictured iconic baseball cards, 52 Mantles, Goudeys and I had always dreamed of owning one. 1996 was a big year in the history of Topps, it was the year they retired card #7 after Mantle's passing. And this year, Topps had also inserted reprints of Mantle as inserts. When I saw what I could potentially pull, I was very excited. The first box, yielded me a 1962 Topps Mantle Finest reprint featuring the wood borders. I had always liked the 1987 set and so I was happy getting a Mantle with a wood design. The second box yielded me 1956 Mantle Reprint which was also an iconic set. It was a very memorable break because it yielded me the two most favorite cards from my childhood. I could never afford the real cards, but these inserts were just a sweet in my view.

In addition to the inserts, the 1996 Topps set also featured Yankees from the 1996 WS Championship team so I was also happy to get multiples of each player. I had busted a few packs here and there so this box break had literally doubled my collection overnight.

You can call me Milton
It would have to be the 2010 Topps Update case that I ripped a few months ago.
Early into it I pulled this:

I don't think I could ever top it again.

In 2002 i had bought a lot of Mantles and had them graded by Psa for resale. I had sold most by the end of 2002 but had a couple left. One day i needed $50 to pay a credit card bill and was low on cash so i took one of the last ones to a small cardshop somewhat near me. I handed the owner the card (66 psa 4) and asked for $100 and a few packs of 2002 Bowman's Best. After he ******* about having little cash i told him i would take $50 and a box of 2002 Sp Authentic. I pulled a Sp Authentic Excellance Ichiro, Ripken, Griff Jr., Mac, Sosa, Giambi /25. Sold for $3,000.

Thanks for the contest.

Back in 2007 I picked up a box of 2007 BDP from from my LCS because I wanted to try and get a Devin Mesoraco auto, seeing as I am a Reds fan. Well about half way into the box and one Freddie Freeman Blue Refractor (which I traded WAY too soon) later this showed up:

MesoracoGoldRefAuto.jpg

Easily the best pull of my life and I never opened anymore 2007 BDP, it only took one box to get the auto I wanted. It since has been graded a BGS 9 but that was mainly for protection than anything.

My story is a little different...the cards pulled were not super valuable like some of those shown or talked about here. And the breaks were not my breaks, they were my Dads.

In December of 2009 my Dad had a stroke about 2 weeks before Christmas. My Dad and I are very close, I have my passion for collecting because of him and we still collect together. He bought cards for me as a kid, I buy him cards now.

One visit to the hospital, my wife and I stopped at Wal Mart to bring him up some stuff he needed (basic stuff to make him feel more comfortable) and I grabbed him two of those Treat (or something like that) packs that have a hit in each. Dad likes to get the hits, so I try to only buy ones with hits in them. He doesn't care about value, he just likes jersey cards.

So I grab him two packs and bring them with me. I showed him the packs and with my help (he was paralyzed on his right side) we ripped into the packs. I had purchased these in the past for him, he likes them and we have always gotten some cool jersey pieces. But this time was different. In the first pack Dad pulled a Hank Aaron PATCH card. My wife and I were floored, Dad had a big smile on his face. Then we rip the next pack and he pulls a Willie Mays PATCH card!

For those few minutes, we all forgot about where we were and how sick Dad was. We were just all smiling and talking about how lucky Dad was with his pack rips, everything else had gone away. It was a few minutes of my life I will never forget, it was almost magical.

Dad is home now and doing much better. He still can't use his right arm, but his speech is much better and he can get around, slowly. And most important, I still have Dad.

I usually bust about 2-3 boxes a year. So last Christmas I got a box of 03 Flair Greats. Wasn't expecting much, so when I hit a Steve Carlton sp auto, I was very surprised. Not high end at all, but was just a cool hit when I wan't expecting it.

Thanks for the contest

The only box I've ever opened was a box of 2009 Bowman Draft...

I got 1 unnumbered ref, no WBC's, and my auto was a Matt Bashore Blue Ref. Auto...

Most memorable because its the only one!!! :)

does 2/3 of a box count?

my two-thirds of a box of 2010 Bowman Jumbos yielded an Orange Wil Myers refractor auto, Harper and Stras Chromes, John Lamb plate, and other parallels that I've forgotten... I opened it in the car on the way home from the card shop. I still remember the red light where I pulled the Myers. not everyday you hit a big card of a prospect you love, and not everyday that prospect catches fire within months of the pull.

this was also the first time in years I'd gone to a card shop and gotten a box, and it brought back great memories.

it was difficult, but i sold it to a member here and enjoyed the money on some non-card things I really enjoy/needed.

I remember going to a show with my friend about 8 years ago or so. We were basketball collectors then, and we opened SPGU, a highend product. He opened his box at the show and hit a Michael Jordan auto! I was so jealous so I bought a box for myself. I didn't open it till we got in the car and told my dad to turn back around. I hit a quad patch of Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James numbered to 5. We had to drive back to pick up a case. Needless to say I wasn't jealous anymore haha!

First ever box I busted was 2007 Bowman I believe, I had just gotten into collecting and any non Padre was going to be trade bait. And to my surprise, in the middle of the box out comes a Alex Rodriguez 1/1 HR autographed card. I kept it in the wrapper since I didn't have any sleeves or top loaders. So I took it to the local show and traded it for an Ladainian Tomlinson Auto and a Adrian Gonzalez auto, one of my worst trades ever but I was young and didnt have a ebay account yet.

Thanks for the contest!

My memorable box break was from this year. After opening a couple boxes of 2010 Bowman Draft and getting crap (big surprise! :( ), I finally hit a Manny Machado Refractor Auto in the 4th box. It seemed like total redemption for me. Gotta love the feeling of pulling those nice "big" hits.

not my "biggest dollar" break - but most memorable ... (it was non sports)

When the crappy HULK movie was coming out (2003 starring Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott) ... Topps had a trading card set that was really rushed to print in time for the movie. The only possible "hit" was a sketch card 1:12 boxes. It was so rushed they didn't have time for autos, or more sketches to get done. - - I bought one box, and hit an amazing sketch. At the time, no one knew the ratio was 1:12 boxes so I sold it way too cheap. I then traded my Pujols numbered rookie card, for a box of Spider-Man Ultra (that was getting scarce), and sold the Spider-Man box for enough money (when added to the sold sketch card) to buy 10 more boxes of 2003 Topps Hulk. I sat down & broke all 10 at once ... never hit another sketch or insert. I still have 20+ base sets, and little else to show for it. UGG ... stop while your ahead.

wow! awesome contest!

May 2004, I went to my very 1st baseball card show here in nyc, the white plains card show. prior to that, i did collect too heavily, off and on, off and on...

it all changed when i was browsing around the show, i see a weird tin from a dealer. it was the 2004 ud sp game used patch edition

if memory serves, i believe he had it for $120 per tin, and he had two tins left. I pointed to one in particular and asked the dealer "can i see that tin?"

when he handed it to me, i was contemplating back and forth, and even asked if he could do it for $110? $115? he was adamant and said $120 was the best price

i took the tin and a box of 2005 ud reflections and while the reflections, i was going to open at my house, i've decided to on that spot, crack the tin that i just bought in front of the dealer

not really expecting anything since this was my 1st tin of 04 sp game used patch edition, i pulled the silver cello and i see the back of the card. it said "wagner, ichiro, mantle"

i flipped it and started going crazy because it was the BEST pull for me at that time!

what's also funny is that BigAppleJack, I didnt know who he was at that time, this was beckett time, had witnessed my pull and although at that time was a complete stranger, said "congratulations on the pull!". When i posted the pull on beckett, BAJ saw the post and replied "dude, that was me who congratulated you! you were shaking!!" lol!

IMG_0002.jpg

til this day, after almost 7 years, it's still in my possession

and this card, this pull, gave me the obsession to start collecting ichiro as well as getting the love back into this crazy (and expensive) hobby

dave

PS - the 2005 ud reflection, when i got home and opened the box? a dual derek jeter/bj upton blue auto #/35 or something. a great day!

4 years ago I was busting a box 2007 Bowman Chrome with my buddy and my girlfriend. We split the packs between the three of us.

I busted my stack and got nothing. Before looking at my buddies stack I asked how he doesn't know anything about cards and said OK he thinks. He showed me his favorite hit which was a nothing 1st year Blue Ref, and then showed me another card and it was a Chris Carter Gold Ref.

ChrisCarter.jpg

I was very happy with that, and asked my girlfriend how she did. She was upset because she didn't pull anything; no autos, no nothing. I checked her stacked and saw a red refractor. She said she didn't think it was any different from the other cards. It was Tommy Hanson. This is why I get her to open my packs.

I bought a case of 07 Draft back in Novemeber of 07 - my first case ever. I busted about 4 boxes then had to go out to dinner with family. The best card I pulled out of those first 4 boxes was a Freddy Sandoval FG Orange Ref /25 - no color autos, no colored prospect refs. I was thinking the whole time at dinner "Man, there's gotta be some nice stuff left in those last 6 boxes" I get home and bust another two boxes and still nada - my best pull up to that point was an Alderson Ref Auto, and a Beau Mills base chrome auto. I was on AIM talking to my buddy giving him a play by play of the massacre. He suggested that I sell him the three boxes to recoup part of my investment. I thought about his offer then just told myself screw it, I'm in it for the long haul. Next two boxes, again, nothing - two more base chrome autos and all green refs. I get to the last box and keep ripping, each pack feeling more and more sick. I had 4 packs left and I see a red border - I was still on AIM and told my friend I hit a red refractor. He said dude, I bet it's Burgess - I looked at the border of the card for about 20 seconds and finally pulled it away and bam! - Michael Burgess Red Ref Auto - I was shaking from head to toe, speechless. I think I ended up getting right at $1k for that card :D

Back in 1998, I asked for a box of 1998 Pacific Crown Royale for Christmas - I knew it was a longshot considering the price of a box back then, but it was Christmas, so you can ask for whatever you want so long as you don't start expecting things.

I kept a small Christmas tree in my room, which my mom typically would put some little trinket or another under the tree to keep me occupied before everyone else woke up Christmas morning. I remember waking up and seeing a few packs of cards, with the bottom pack being a pack of '98 Crown Royale. I was both excited yet a bit disappointed considering I knew then I wasn't getting the box - but I ripped with joy anyways. Now, I know y'all pull 1/1s and whatnot on this board, but in the middle of the pack was the rarest card I ever pulled - a Kerry Wood, Firestone on Baseball autographed by Roy Firestone (not serially numbered, but supposedly only 8 were signed).

After basking the in glory of my greatest pull ever, eventually everyone woke up and went downstairs where lo and behold I found the remainder of a box of Crown Royale!! I couldn't believe that my mom would be so sneaky as to take one pack out... she definitely told me she did it on purpose to surprise me later on. The remainder of the box yielded a ton of short prints, as well as a Sammy Sosa Limited Series, but the regular cards were so damn nice, I treated them all as if they were inserts.

Through the years I also got a few boxes of UD Retro (or should I say, lunch boxes of UD Retro), but nothing could beat the box of 1998 Pacific Crown Royale.

(Also, in case anyone's a big Sosa or Wood collector, I still have both those cards :) )

Opened a box of 2000 UD Yankees Legends back in the day. I pulled a so-so GU and a completely forgettable auto--I really can't remember who they were--was down to the last four packs, and figured they were duds for sure. Let my wife open them, and she pulled a Roger Maris Legendary Lumber. Ended up flipping it for around $100, so we got our box price back, but it taught me an important lesson: Never doubt wife/spouse mojo.
