I started collecting in 1980, so all the 80's cards hold affection for me.

There's one particular card that holds particular fondness for me. It's the 1980 Topps Fred Lynn card. Out of all the cards I freed from their wax bonds that year, this one was my favorite. I was in my second year of Little League, and to my 8-year old eyes, Freddie looked like such a professional. The way he ran with his glove tucked under his arm made him look so cool to me. I used to run into our dugout at the end of each inning all willy-nilly, glove flying everywhere. After I saw this card, I always ran in with my glove tucked under my armpit and my head held high, just like Lynn on this card. Maybe I looked like a fool, but I thought I looked like a big leaguer.

I still have the card in my dresser. I love 80 Topps!

Probably like many of the people that posted on this thread, I was crazy about baseball and football cards in the 80s when I was a kid (still am in some ways, but it's not the same). So when companies inserted baseball cards into food products that I could try to convince my parents to buy, that was even better. I don't remember my mom ever allowing us to eat Cookie Crisp, but when they had baseball cards in them, I somehow convinced her to relent, and I vividly remember somehow winning an uncut sheet of the cards. I don't remember if there was a redemption card or what, but somehow I won one and mailed something in and a few weeks later, this came:

To a baseball card collector, an uncut sheet was the coolest thing to have (and of course I had visions of it being worth a ton of money). Too bad I don't have it anymore, and I don't remember there being a blue border, but I'm almost positive this is/was the sheet. Later on, I overdosed on Honeycomb when they put cards in their boxes of cereal... but no uncut sheet.

One other memory I have of the 80s and collecting is the rare times that a commercial would come on TV for baseball cards. I always thought that was the coolest thing. It may have been the early 90s though because I remember the rare commercial being for Upper Deck.

if anyone wants a couple thousand 80's cards, pm me

People feel the same way about 80's cards as they do about their kids. They wouldn't take a million dollars for the ones they got but they wouldn't give a nickel for any more.

that is the best description ever!

congrats on the big win eric... is it safe to assume that the hits will be posted in this thread?

i have had these 3 cards since i pulled them. my family was pretty poor so we had to cut up the photo album pages my grandma would give us and these three fit perfectly from side to side. they have been in every home i have owned and the league leader card is the only one i have from that release without a thumbtack hole in it!

Hmmmm...I am having mixed emotions about this thread. I started collecting at the beginning of the 80's. My best memory was buying 70's packs for fun (Pacific Trading Cards was my local Hobby shop back in the day, ever hear of it? :D ) I was really into cards through the entire decade.

I guess the 80's to me represents set collecting more than anything. I really don't have an affection for the cards, and besides the 1983 Topps (because of Gwynn) I really hated all of the sets of the 80's. I bought them, because I loved cards and baseball, but I was never "in love" with the baseball cards (especially compared to the basketball cards of the 80's)
But I always tried to complete sets in baseball every year. The sorting, the checklist, buying packs and saying, "Got it. Got it. Got it. Need it. Got it. Need it..."
I never really noticed the Star Company, the Fleer Box sets, Panini, Red Foley, all of those crazy sets that I HAD to have (and got) nowadays. I think I have everything from the 80's with Gwynn, and there's nothing that really stands out to me as a card that I really HAD to scan for this thread... maybe this one:

It wasn't until the 90's that I really got into the 80's cards. After 1992 Bowman, maybe? Then I remember going back and buying packs of 1987 Fleer, 1986 Donruss, 1989 Upper Deck and starting to have any feeling at all for those 80's cards and trying to pull a Puckett, or Clark, or a Griffey.

The 90's, now, that changed everything! We should start a thread showing off the great 90's inserts!!....

I still have about 20-30 monster boxes of 1980's cards...those were my teenage years (like many on the boards today) and worked in a store and was able to get all my cards at wholesale prices....I love going back and looking at some of them still today. Here are my favorites...

Some Auto cards from 1988 Donruss...I started this as something to do with the cards that had wax and gum stains. I figured if the card was ruined with staining (usually on the back ), I would risk losing it in the mail as a TTM request.......some of the results below...I have probably 200+ auto'd 1980's cards in total....Enjoy

INCREDIBLE Ryan Slabs!!!

Thanks! I still like all my 60's/70's over the 80's though...time for a new thread on the 70s cards, but probably not too many on here were around then! ;)
