As a Ripken collector who loves the 80's oddball issues... I'll have a bit to contribute to this thread. At work now though, so it will have to wait

Lots of great stories guys! I've been trying to remember all the hot cards through the decade. 84 Donruss Mattingly and 85 Topps McGwire are the easy ones but how bout some whose hype did not last as long? The 1987 Fleer Kevin Seitzer was big for a while among my friends. He was going to be ROY and for a while the 87 Fleer was his lone card before all the Update and 'Rookies' sets. People were going nuts for it.

I decided to add some scans of a few of my remaining 80's cards

1989 Fleer Cello Pack. Unopened. Wade Boggs on the front and Mike Schmidt on the back. 2 HOF 3rd baseman showing. I bought this at a store sometime in 89 and have kept it sealed since. Surprised it has survived. 88 Revco Drug League Leader set. I think these were originally .99 cents.

My other friend, Shawn, went with a player who was born locally, Tom Glavine. According to my parents, when I was born, we lived in the same apartment building as his family (I don't know how accurate that is), but he was just a couple towns over, and being in Massachusetts, it's still somewhat rare for local kids to go pro given the limited amount of warm weather around here

I remember being in awe of the fact that Glavine was a local kid. Every time my parents drove by his place, I would say "that's Tom Glavine's house!" I still think the same thing when I drive by now.

Haha, I think the same thing when I drive by those apartment buildings (right at the corner of Middlesex Turnpike).

I remember 1988 when my neighbor had a bunch of Mark Grace Donruss rookies. That was the first time I had heard of him.

Kal Daniels! Been a while since I heard that name. He was going to be the next Eric Davis...

I always preferred the 88 Fleer Jefferies.
I remember a Sports Illustrated article on him I think from right before he came up. It showed him training swinging a bat in a swimming pool.
I tried to carry my bat to the public pool so I could practice my swing like him but my dad wouldn't let me. :lol:
1987 Donruss Terry Steinbach was hot for a bit.
1988 Score Traded Chris Sabo.

Yup the Jim Abbot 3x card. I remember trying like hell trying to get the Dale Murphy rev neg and the Gary Sheffield position errors cards out of 89 UD.
