And HERE is Mr.1989!!! My favorite card from the 80's is actually a football card, a 1980 Topps Rocky Bleier misprint that I personally own. But baseball, I'd have to say 1989 John Smiley. :D

I loved that you could get images of your favorite players with almost anything in the 80s; soft drinks, athletic wear, breakfast cereal, candy and snacks of all manner, magazines, all manner of small sets from discount and drug stores

tonight i spent an hour going through my '81 Topps Traded Factory Set and was able to find 16 cards i can use for my set. Raines was the only "money" card that made the cut.

raines is a nice one to hit on. you are either going to have the nicest 80s topps sets ever... or a room with soft padding and a no belt sign on the wall. are you just using the old eyeball test or getting technical?

Clint, i really think its going to be the latter. i am nucking futs for doing this. i will not deny that.

i picked up a complete '83 set in sheets/binder (with traded) on eBay last week for $44. came in today. spent two hours going over the regular set (havnt gotten to the traded yet) and was able to use 53 of the 792 cards for my set. That HAS to be the definition of crazy.

i am technical and have a clear ruler to measure the ones that pass the eye-ball test. The centering is pretty all over the place and it was not hard to eliminate most of them. the "Big Three" had their stereotypical "issues" (as expected) and did not make the cut (again, expected)

i really think this focus is going to have to be done via unopened product, as hand collated sets (even in sheets) just have too much going against them from the get-go, ESPECIALLY buying them online. i MIGHT be able to get a better idea if i can eye-ball a set in person before making a purchase, if that makes sense.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the '83TT set is wrecked all over the place.

sometimes you get what you pay for... time to stay away from eBay for set wins

Great lineup! I'm a huge fan of food issues.

Added a little smoke to the collection today:

holy smokes technical is the way to do it if you are going to go for perfection! i know the multi player rookie cards are all over the place... however 53 outta 792 seems like a faairly steep percentage. at least in comparison to the 16 in the 1981 set. the nice thing is the vending boxes and wax i have seen are fairly priced.

The 80's retail boxed sets bring back good memories of going to McCrory's, Walgreens, K-Mart and KayBee to pick up some packs and perhaps one of those sets.

Haven't seen many of those jumbo Diamond Kings packed up like that. Are we looking at a monster break soon? If so, I could use a couple of 87 Jumbos... ;)

i have to check my SCD, but i think the DKs are full sets because of the advert on the '85 Donruss wrapper

went through a 82TT Set (No Ripken) tonight and was able to find one card for my set.
Sadly just about the entire set was tilted.

Also a shout out to FCB "Tom Oates" as he was able to help me with 4 cards for my '79 Set.

How many of you guys have the rarer variations of the 89 Fleer Billy Ripken card?

I was just curious, I see the black scribble show up on ebay once in a while
