Guillen is an idiot. I almost lol'd watching his press conference with the "language barrier" excuse. That said, the man is entitled to his opinion.

He's entitled to his opinion and the Marlins are entitled to fine him or suspend him and the Cuban heritage Marlins fans (and anyone else with a brain) is entitled to boycott the Marlins as long as Guillen is the manager.

ok?

Really? Are you bilingual?

To what question, regardless of a language barrier, is the following statement a wise and moral opinion about Fidel Castro?

"I love Fidel Castro. ... I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (expletive) is still there."

So Ozzie doesn't know the English words for "love" and "respect"? What question in English could Ozzie have been mistakenly responding to?

I don't know. So do you think he meant he loves Castro, like he hopes to marry him someday? Or he loves him like he loves ice cream? Or like he loves his dog?

This is the part I don't get. I understood what Ozzie was saying from the beginning. My version would go like this:

I love Rush Limbaugh. Despite the fact that people have been trying to get him off the air for years, that fat (expletive) is still there making republicans look bad.

See what I mean? I don't love Rush Limbaugh. I hate him. But I would make the above statement.

Here's an interesting tidbit about Guillen in the article:

In 2011, Guillén went after actor Sean Penn for his support of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who has a close alliance with Fidel Castro.

Could it be that Ozzie doesn't really love Castro? Hmmmm....

And here's a really good question.... why were they even talking about Fidel Castro in the first place? ::facepalm::

Sorry, I wasn't trying to assume you said something that you didn't, but when I saw "entitled to his opinion" my mind instantly assumed "he's entitled to his opinion, so everyone should leave him alone, or there should be no ramifications for what he said". I know you didn't say that, but that's what prompted my response.

Comparing Fidel Castro with Rush Limbaugh is absolutely absurd. One is murderous tyrant while the other is a talk radio host. The reason Ozzie's comments are so incendiary is because of who they are about.

Suppose Ozzie were hired to manage the Mets and the subject of 9/11 came up and he was asked about Bin Laden and he said, "I respect Bin Laden, I love Bin Laden. You know why? Because a lot of people tried to kill that (expletive) for 10 years and he was still there." Or suppose he became the Braves manager and the subject of race came up and he said, "I respect the ****, I love the ****. You know why? Because a lot of people have tried to kill those (#%&ers) for a hundred years and they are still there."

Would I think Ozzie believed these things? No. I would be upset, though, because such comments show a total lack of respect on Ozzie's part for those killed by them and I'd want him to apologize.

If I understood correctly they were talking about Hugo Chavez in Venezuela (Ozzie is Venzuelan) and somehow the interview jumped from one tyrant to the other... Maybe because Hugo Chavez is getting Chemo therapy in Cuba?

Something I've been wondering for years, are there really NO other people who are managing in the minors, or bench coaches who could do just as good of a job of managing without the baggage?

And before you go all blah blah blah about your Latin American wife that somehow makes your long island ***** ass "multicultural"; I can and do speak three languages basically everyday and I know the ones that I am poor at and choose my words more wisely using that language. I also know enough English to note that was one hell of a run on sentence. Be that as it may, Ozzie Guillan has 0 legs to stand on re: language barrier.

I used to work with a guy who married an African American Woman and he actually
thought that he was now considered African and could use that card every time something
didn't go his way. ::facepalm::

If it was an avg American manager he would have been canned
so fast his head would have spun...

Ozzie Guillen World Series ring count : 1
Those minor league coaches : 0

That ring's appeal will wear off at some point, but for now, it's still a little shiny.

Are we supposed to be in love with Fidel Castro and forgive his evil, mayhem & killing from the past 40 + years??

you don't have to agree with ozzie, you just have to respect that he is entitled to an opinion (assuming foreigners have free speech protections like U.S. citizens do). How would the Cubans or Cuban-Americans feel if the U.S. rounded up every one of them that disagrees with Ozzie or feels he should be fired and deport them back to Cuba? This is America and their speech is protected so of course a roundup and deportation would not happen for anything related to Ozzie.

I don't agree with ozzie, but I do believe the Marlins are illegally suspending him unless you can show me a US Supreme Court decision that states what Ozzie said violates protected free speech laws, that Ozzie isn't entitled to free speech laws because he's a foreigner, or a Marlins contract has a clause that you can show me that demonstrates Ozzie violated part of his employement contract and thus is open to action from the ballclub such as a suspension.

the Marlins should have just said something like "In America, the right of protected free speech is important and has to be respected. The Florida Marlins baseball club does not agree with the opinion of Manger Ozzie Guillen and the remarks about Fidel Castro were just the opinion of Ozzie Guillen and not of the baseball club. /s/the 1%'er owner of the Florida Marlins Baseball Club".

Safe to say Ozzie has tenure this season with the Marlins. If they fire him, he can file a civil rights lawsuit against the club.

Two final thoughts:

1) I wonder if this will make MLB clubs more apt to sign new managers to one year initial deal so that if the manager doesn't fit in, doesn't have the performance the team feels is minimum necessary for a new skipper, or says things the club doesn't agree with, they are able to let him go as a free agent manager and not feel like the manager thinks there was a particular illegal reason for the firing.

2) Did Ozzie really say that from the heart or was it something put up to him by a producer of THE FRANCHISE? If filming has been boring over the almost two months, I bet a producer told Ozzie to say something controversial to spice up the documentary.

When an employee says something that pisses off all your customers, you have the right to discipline or fire him.
