Player collectors pay huge, mostly in sets like those listed by Lance. These sets are extremely low printed and since they were printed in the 90s impossible to find. His list is quite solid!

Going strictly by "BV" is pretty straight-forward by comparing the guides and their listed prices, a list can be generated quickly.

But I suspect that's not what you were asking. (if it was - I apologize)

Rather: What 90's issues are most valuable/sought after and are also high priced ticked items based on experience & observation. (excluding individual cards like the UD Mantle/Griffey Dual Auto or 1/1s)

My opinion:

1993 Pinnacle Cooperstown Promos - Memories have long since faded in regards to the number issued. Tuff hunting if your player was among the selected.
1996 Select Certified Mirror Golds - Less than 30 issued. Insanely tuff, insofar as costs are considered.
1996 Studio Silver Press Proofs - 100 issued, but because this was a retail-only insert, availability swings wildly from easy-to-impossible to get.
1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Gold - 30 issued. Long held in private collections, they rarely come up for auction.
1998 Donruss Crusade Reds - Everyone knows the deal with these guys. But Crusades in general were fairly daunting to bust.
1998 Donruss Preferred Precious Metals- 50 issued.
1998 Donruss Update Signature Previews - Crazy difficult, with a few players not even issued but finding their way to the hobby anyway. Did three cases worth of product trying to get one. <empty hands> Thank God my player wasn't selected for the Previews. <wiping sweat off brow> Jeter fans you have my sympathy.
1998 Flair Showcase Perfect 10 - 10 issued per player. Needle in a haystack the size of the Chrysler Building.
1998 UD Retro Quantum Leap - 50 issued, but so much of this product was unopened; left in their lunchboxes in "mint condition".
1999 Fleer Tradition Starting Nine - 9 issued per player/per card (some had several!) and almost never seen. Ridiculously priced when they do come up.

Honorable Mention:

1994 UD SP Red Holofoils (I cry whenever I think back to the Griffey and two(!) ARods I busted back then. Long since gone for pennies on the dollar back in the late 90's ---- hence the sobbing you hear. :-(...
1998 Donruss Elite Prime Numbers Die-Cuts

I excluded the following since they were never available to the open hobby community when they were printed:

1992 Donruss Diamond King Retail Supers
1995 Fleer Extra Bases Prototype Game Cards
1997 Topps Pro Shooters Checklist Cards
1998 Score All-Score Gold Variants
1998 Pinnacle Bankruptcy - any.

Nice job of answering the question as always Lance. I agree pretty much across the board. One that you didn't mention and consistently gets good money is 1996 Pinnacle Aficionado First Pitch Previews. Add that to the list and you're golden.

Yeah the Crusades are an insert divided into three sets. The Mirrors are a parallel divided into x sets depending on the year. I'm not sure how to compare PSA10s to low print runs, but I know the highest graded card doesn't make it a 1/1 :)

Does your friend Richard know how many Gold Embossed Refractor sets were produced? Also, how many sets does he have? I'm close to finishing mine. I bet your friend wasn't too pleased when Burbank listed a bunch of them a few months back.

[quote="George_Calfas":1bav9ldq]I agree that when a Crusade Red pops up they sell well, however they are one of three cards from and insert set (green, purple, red). The 1996 Mirror Gold Nomo CS (the second in the set, not the primary card) recently sold for $1500+, the Red Crusade hit $1350. Since those have a low print run, 25 and 30 I would compare sells to 1993 refractor PSA10,

Richard is the name of the 1997 Embossed Refractor buyer, good friend.

My thoughts on comparing PSA10 1993 to Reds or Mirror golds is population, most cards now have PSA10s in population from 10-30 (two have 0 PSA10s). That balances the value (imo) due to print runs; 241ish-30-25.

I know the approx print run from the 1997s ;)
If you want to share your needs I might be able to help...plus I will reply with print run.[/quote:1bav9ldq]

Please share. :)

My apologies for the delayed reply. Been kinda hectic here - which is good. <g>

Anyway, thank you for your kind words. 'Preciate it. <nod>

And you're right - those First Pitch Previews were wickedly tough for some players. Thankfully Thomas seems to have a decent amount out there so us Frank Collectors don't have to fight to the death to get an example for the pc. :-D

But I know that some players were very poorly distributed. Have no idea how difficult it must've been to get a Grace. I'm guessing tough.

BTW on a funny (but secret) note I accidentally bumped into another difficult 90's issue. Am on the hunt now. You other guys stay away.

If you ever see one of these, don't let it go.

Also, you might want to put the 1990 Donruss Aqueous Test on this list. Speaking from personal (and recent) experience, that is...

I have a 1998 Flair Showcase Perfect 10 Alex Rodriquez # 3/10 .These cards are hand-numbered.One of the last pricings was a few years back, but this card was valued at $1300. They are very, very scarce and trying to find people who have one is difficult. I saw a Gregg Maddux online but I didn't have a price guide available. It probably wasn't it one anyway. It is still a rare bird and even though there was a recession this card still commands top dollar.

These have pulled down some pretty big #'s. Didn't the Troy Glaus pull down 4 figures fairly recently? I think the last A-Rod was around $800 or so to a boardmember here IIRC....

I love the threads on here about 90's inserts, which got me thinking. Should we maybe try to have a thread per set with the opening post giving info about it (print run, odds to pull if known, current rarity and oddball facts about the set) and a checklist of the set. The posts after that could be people throwing up scans of the ones they have and sharing stories about them.

Thought I'd ask first since I'm not sure if this would be seen as clutter having a post for each popular insert set or more of a tribute to these sets. I think it could be a cool way to centralize and preserve the info for these. What do you guys think?

This actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. I'm sure one of the more prominent 90's collectors would be happy to collect all the links

Skybox precious metal gems, and later rubys. Super raves, and topps gold label red label class 3? /25. Might not book the most but they bring good coin. Ultra Platinums don't seem to get as much love, maybe some of the big players. 99 Ultimate Victory parallel /25 used to bring some jaw dropping prices sometimes, not sure if they still do. No one has mentioned any of the Credentials sets either. The SP guys sell like crazy.
This probably goes in the big 90s insert thread, but does anyone here own a 96 Afficianado Magic Numbers Sample card of their player. I know I have one, but it's not Griffey. Griffey is the only player listed on eBay in quite a while. Not sure if every player in the set has one.

I agree Andy. It would be much easier to find information instead of digging through the 90's threads.

It would make searching faster for those visiting the site who aren't regulars as well to have thread titles matching the sets. Just sounds like a neat idea. The 90's thread gets some serious love around here but has become a bit of its own monster
