At what point does a collector become a "Super Collector"?

Is it a percentage of total cards?

Is it a notation given to you by fellow collectors or can you give yourself the "Super Collector" label?

I have near 1000 cards of Sammy Sosa, but I don't consider myself a super collector.

For one, I don't "chase" after cards (for example, I don't go after a rainbow, or every card from a product. I simply get what I can, when I can (only if I like it).

Second, I realize I don't have the patience or budget to go after everything.

How about a red cape, blue leotard, red boots, a curly q hair curl that obscures your forehead and a bunch of nice cards?

I get a laugh when I see someone start to collect a player, have 5 GU, 25 base, and 6 autos and call themselves a super collector. There are LEGIT super collectors on these boards, chavez collector, the Vizquel collector, among among 15 others that come to mind.

There's no such thing to me, it's just a made up term to try to add prestige to something that's supposed to be for fun.

I'd like to consider myself a Super Collector. I think if someone collects one player and tries to acquire as many cards of that player as possible (especially the high end), that should qualify them as Super Collector. I'd also say that you should have at least 500 unique cards of that player.

and I'm not saying that a "Super collector" is any better than someone that isn't deemed a "Super Collector".

But there is something to be said about dedication to a player/set.

Coming from the guy with the "Prospect for Profit" banner.

I have a pretty sizable Rick Porcello collection and am actively adding more. It's very possible that it's the best Porcello collection in existence, but I still wouldn't call myself a "super collector". As stated above, it's for fun...no need for special titles in my opinion.

I'd put myself in the Supercollector category for Gary Gaetti, but not for other guys like Ozzie Smith, Joe Mauer, Morneau, etc. I regularly search for Gaetti stuff, but not those other guys. Plus I'm pretty limited in what I need. I have a high percentage of what Gary has out there (granted not as much as most guys, but that's what keeps it manageable.) so I'm doing really well.

If you consider yourself a "super collector", I'm fine with that. It means something a little different to everyone, so I think it would be hard to define it to a set criteria. I try to acquire every Will Clark ever made. Call me stupid, call me smart, call it a poor choice, call it super, definitely won't change my collecting habits. But I'll tell you this, if I somehow won the lottery, I sure could get a heck of a lot more "super" cards.
