Supercollectivity is possessing a purchasing resistance of exactly zero when one encounters a cardboard image that one does not currently possess. Like ferromagnetism and atomic spectral lines, supercollectivity is a quantum mechanical phenomenon.

I love it! I'm pretty sure I have that!

I believe it's when you buy stuff knowing there is a 0% possibility you could ever get 1/2 your money back.

To me a super collector isn't one that just goes after cards goes but goes after magazines/bobbleheads/photoballs/newspapers/etc...

I do consider myself a "super collector" based on my collection/obsession but part of that is because I have obtained 5 different boxes Andruw was pictured on, 10 different magazine, 9 bobbleheads with out a checklist. I'm also over 60% of ticket stubs of all Andruw HR games. Not to mention I did win the player supercollector of the year on the bench in 2008  .

I'm not a Tulo Super Collector due to not being rich...

If I had unlimited buying power I'd have them all (that I've seen).

At one point I had the following:

2005 Chrome Rainbow (minus the Red Refractor)
2005 Bowman Rainbow (reg, gold, white, & Red 1/1)
2005 Sterling BGS 9.5 reg, ref, black ref, and the RED ref BGS 10
2005 Rookie Cup Reg, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue
2005 USA Black, Blue Jersey Auto, Red, Red Jersey Auto

I've had to sell most of that due to starting a family and the recession...no complaints. Long story short....$$$$$$ has a lot to do with being a true Super Collector now-a-days.

* sorry for any typos, I have a severely damaged index finger.

Being low end and having lots of parallels, I have been able to amass a huge Ryan Garko Collection. With the bats, jerseys, gloves, shoes and then the trading cards, I suppose that makes me a SuperCollector.

I'm trying to get every Greg Reynolds card (pretty close to completing it) except for his Super (see Superfractors collection) I wouldn't consider myself a super collector. I think the caliber of player plays into it also. There's nothing super about having every card of a career minor leaguer or a career journeyman utility player.

I'm a bit torn on this.

I'd like to think I've got a pretty nice collection of cards and memorabilia. Sure, I might even be certifiably nuts. But part of me feels like I'd be a serious nob giving myself a title and asking people to use it. I don't really frequent any other boards, but have visited them enough to see the SC badge or award they give away. I can't help but wonder what the point is. There might be a good one, and if so I'm all for it. Or would we just be copying and/or following suit?

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of my collection but I do it 100% for my own enjoyment. If someone appreciates and recognizes my collection, so be it! But I certainly don't measure myself based on it.

Like some other guys, there are certain collections here that we're lucky enough to get a peek at. For example I personally can't wait for Chad to post his insane Chavez maildays. For me, a SuperCollector is someone who takes his collecting beyond what the majority of other guys do. It's not just $, but obviously it helps. In my opinion the most important factors are time, passion, KNOWLEDGE, enthusiasm, and of course size/breadth of the collection. The greatest SuperCollectors use their expertise and help fellow collectors. They're eager help another collector with info, heads-up on a card, advice, or even shipping something without asking anything in return.

If FCB chooses to go with it, I hope it's a peer-nomination/recognition process and not a self-assigned thing.

I am not an Albert Pujols Super Collector. I am more of an Albert Pujols "Specialized" Collector in that I mainly collect oddball cards (food issues, team sets, stadium give-aways, restaurant, box toppers, box bottoms, sheets, panels, magazine inserts, promos, previews, samples, exclusives, limited editions, charitable affiliations, toys, games, etc...). A Super Collector is one who collects anything and everything of a particular player or team, especially the oddball stuff.

One criteria is that you must own more than 50 cards.

You'd have to if you were really collecting a player with a lot of cards. By the way...you've got a PM.

Anyone can be a Super Collector !
I would consider myself as having a cardboard disease. It is hard to shake. Especially when you get the shakes scrubbing ebay for cards you either do not have or feel you need. I agree with ......

So true.
^^ FIXED!

I would say for me it is the reality of not getting 1/10th of the money back if intending to sell. I do not plan to sell anything of my " Player Collector Obession" until my broad claims I make it on the Super Hoarder show.

Why is this topic always beat to death? if you own a large collection of one player you are a super collector (or hoarder). Most super collectors concentrate on one player and just obtain anything and everything they can. You can proclaim yourself a SC but its always nice when your voted that by your peers on some of these trading boards and message boards. I see it as a compliment that total strangers think Im crazy enough to spend my time and money on the player I do without expectation of financial return and recognize my collection for what it is as a whole.

to me player collecting is about dedication.. whether they have 40 cards or 10,000 its about the never ending chase and the enjoyment that brings. Personally I have a ton of memories of card shows and random card shops and stories that go with certain cards that just remain with me forever. My collection has much more sentimental value than monetary and you simply just can't replace it so I don't ever plan to part with it.

In my opinion 'super collector' is a title someone gives you, not something you proclaim. It always irks me to see someone calling themselves a 'super collector' or someone saying "I super collect player X"...........

I believe the term only applies to a select few collectors. To me it depends on two things: longevity and dedication.

A Super Collector could be someone who started as a kid and has put together (not bought complete sets, mind you) card by card, show by show, every Topps set from the 60's to the 80's, let's say. Or it's someone who has been collecting Griffey or Jeter since they were rookies and have never swayed from finding the cards that absolutely no one else has. Or it's the guy who has 5-10-15K plus cards of one player/team and that's all that they scour the internet for. Or the guy who's worked on certain sets for decades until they finally finish the set.

Every person with a collection of any kind of any sport on these boards is a great collector, have great collections, and can call themselves what they like. But until they have put in the time and dedication and focus and patience that it takes to do this for years and years and years, I don't think that just having a great collection makes them a Super Collector.
