The title is not something you can assign yourself. Your collection should catch the eyes of others, it should make them say "daaaaammmmn". There are plenty of player collectors with really great cards. However, the ones that make me say damn are the ones with the super rare cards, respect the nature of what they own, and know how much effort/cash it took to obtain those pieces.

Remember FCB is just one of many message boards, there are collectors out there that many of us have never heard of. Just because you are great here you could be a small fish elsewhere.

What makes a collector a "super collector?"

To answer this question is as difficult as securing the four corners of a picnic blanket.
One could say pizza, old sneakers and bad brains but it takes more than that to make a collector a super collector.

I've had conversations with the Internet and the Internet wants us to know that poor decision making skills, lack of good judgement and lack of fiscal responsibility are not the only human flaws necessary to be a super collector. And that is why the Internet sent us her only child, Ebay, to be a presence in our lives. The Internet wants us to know that we should walk the cold dark Earth with a debt of gratitude toward her and her offspring. Without the Internet we would all live isolated pastoral lives in tents and without her child coming into our homes, offices, and schools we would revert back to our old ways of collecting and posturing. We must not forget how Ebay enables very focused individuals that are misguided, with compulsive spending habits and a knack for seeing value where there isn't, to buy quickly and efficiently. In the end, the supercollector is not alone even though he or she may only see one set of footprints in the sand because the Internet was there the whole time.
Hope this clears things up because I'm off to mow the grass.

I always thought it was a derogatory term.

Seriously.

Ha, I totally agree. Having thousands of cards is one thing, but having thousands of cards of ONE player??? Kinda creepy. What would that player think if he saw your collection??? It's almost like a 'legitimate' form of stalking. Even the best ball players aren't better people than us, they're just better at baseball.

But, that's just me. To each their own, as always.

I think someone said it best when he/she said a person becomes a "Super Collector" when you see a card and think of that person. For example, I found a couple of cards about two months ago and mailed them out to the person who I thought they should belong to. I would think when this guy opened his mail he said, "SUPER!".

to be honest, I have identified myself as a so-called 'supercollector', but not to bestow myself with a title. To me, I think it lets other people know that serious about my player collection. I am always very grateful when people think of me when they come across a Butler card they think I'd be interested in - that makes me happy that my collection has a little recognition in the hobby.

I also think of specific people here and elsewhere when I see a particular card or hear a player's name. I would definitely consider them supercollectors. I don't necessarily think of a certain person when it comes to collecting sets, although Jeff and Kevin come to mind when it comes to Heritage and tonsofcommons when it comes to a particular brand.

I'm not a collector anymore but as a dealer that's setup at over 250 shows, I could always tell a Super Collector from across the room. He wasn't carrying a Beckett and didn't care about the price. He only cared if it was a card or other object with his favorite players photo on it. If he didn't have it and it was rare he knew how to pull the trigger and didn't need to call home and get permission from Mommie to blow a *** of cash.
He always thanked me and was very polite and grateful. I can tell there are several Super Collectors on this site and a lot of people who are envious of them. Most of the guys I met were not rich but it was one of there vices (maybe like smoking, gambling or drinking) to others.

While I don't like the term because of various hobby connotations, I'd consider myself a Frank Thomas super collector; not nearly the superest of supers in terms of collection size or value, but super none-the-less. No one here can know the passion I have for my collection and how much of my identity it represents. For me, it's my passion, the way I feel about my collection, that makes me a super collector.

While some believe it is a title that must be bestowed, my general view is that it is a feeling that must be felt. I very much enjoy having others to share my passion with, but, in the end, if I were alone on an island as the only Frank Thomas "super" collector in the world, the fervor with which I collect would remain.

I'm as much of a Frank Thomas super collector today as I was at 7 years old in 1991, a time before internet forums and before I knew other Thomas collectors who were just as passionate as myself.

If you sleep with a card tucked into your underpants...you may be a supercollector.

This thread is starting to sound like Jeff Foxworthy!! :D

This is just a personal opinion, but Super Collectors to me have a "completist" mentality, have amazing knowledge about their collection, help out other collectors of their specialty, aren't afraid to ignore book value but smart enough to know the real value and scarcity of an item and not overpay 90% of the time, love the thrill of the hunt, still get excited about base cards, share their collection and knowledge instead of keeping it locked away, and take pride in their collections.

Lots of ways to define Super Collectors, but most don't care. A few do it for the admiration, but for many it's a quest, with the reward being the pursuit, and the friends/acquaintances made along the way.
