The 98 Bowman /5 thread brought me back to the days of walking into a card store and asking if they sold any cards with pieces of game used jersey on them. It seemed to be around this time that extremely low numbered cards were showing up. I can remember pulling a Drew Bledsoe Pinnacle Red Refractor card that was limited to 99 and it was the lowest print run card I had at the time. The first 1/1 I remember seeing was a Ben Grieve 1999 Upper Deck Patch card. I wonder if the first 1/1 set was even baseball? The first big autographed 1/1 I saw was a Michael Jordan Season Ticket auto from Upper Deck. I dont know if it was numbered or not but I know all the dealers were talking about it being the only one made, I want to saw it was in 98.

TY for the response! I think I remember that set. I believe a friend of mine had a Greg Maddux /20 that he pulled. I just checked Ebay and see theres 1 that sold. Its Tony Clark and went for $130, not bad.

I believe 1997 Flair Showcase was the first 1/1 in baseball.

However, the first 1/1 cards appeared in football courtesy 1994 Collector's Edge.

Nope, wasn't me :(

It's a tie between 1997 Flair Showcase and 1997 Pinnacle. Both had 1/1's that year; Flair with the Masterpiece Collection and Pinnacle with the plates. Offhand I can't remember which set was released first in the year.

1997 Fleer Flair. I remember pulling a Marquis Grissom and sold it at a Cow Palace show for $300. Suckers!

I still love the late 90's Flair Showcase cards. Just absolutely beautiful. I remember the Masterpiece versions selling for some ridiculous amounts back in the day.

Just looked on eBay and came across this. ::facepalm::

That's funny because the first 1/1 I recall seeing was a Marquis Grissom. I believe it was 98 Topps Gold Label. It was at a show for $80.

The only 1/1 I pulled in the 90's was out of 1998 Ultra Football - Lake Dawson. The shop owner helped me sell it just a few days later on some listserv for $175.

What about 1997 Pinnacle Certified Mirror Blacks? Do those count? :)

Both Pinnacle and Stadium Club had plates in 1997 but Flair had the first true 1/1s that year. I remember seeing a guy pull a Scott Rolen and promptly selling it for $700.

they still sell for ridiculous amounts. Two of the three Butler 1/1s have surfaced over the years. One of them came out not too long after release and went for around $250 iirc. The other showed up on eBay last year and it went for over $250 as well. The first one I was mildly disappointed that I missed out on, but not overly so - I was afraid to spend that kind of coin on a card at that time. Last year's was a tough defeat. I really believed I'd be able to snag that card for a fairly good price, as no other serious Butler collectors have really surfaced. I'm certain it went to an overseas bidder rather than a Butler collector. There must be someone over there with deep pockets seeing how far he can get with the Flair Masterpieces.

I STILL walk into my card shop and ask cards with pieces of game used jersey on them! Of course, I'm referencing the bargain bin, but still.
