What to do with early 80s complete sets?

A friend recently asked me if I would check out a box of cards he had to see if there was anything valuable. It's mostly complete sets from the 80s including 1980-1984 Topps, 1985 Donruss, and most years of Topps from 1986-1996. There are also a couple Donruss and O Pee Chee sets from the 80s.

I'm not as familiar with older stuff like this as I am with the recent stuff so I could use a little advice. If my buddy just wants to get as much for them as possible, is it best to sell the sets as complete sets? Or would it be better to pull out the top rookies from each year and take a shot at having them graded and sell stuff individually? Obviously the late 80s won't be worth much, but it looks like the early 80s sets could bring a couple hundred bucks as complete sets.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Looks like 81 OPC, with the other non-Topps sets being 86 and 87 Donruss and 87 Fleer. He also has Topps sets from 90-96, and a box of 92 wax

He moved to a new house and they were left behind by the previous owner so he basically told me he'd be happy with whatever he can get for them.

ahhh then its all gravy. list them, but keep the S&H as low as possible. and the S&H is going to be a BI*CH due to size and weight.

I'd love an '87 Fleer and '87 Donruss set. I think the hard part with selling these types of sets is that no one wants to pay the shipping on them.

BINGO!

factory sets of anything after 1985 are pretty much under $10 of course there are exceptions ('87 Fleer Factory Set is $20) but they are not hard to find. Shipping is the real killer as it's usually more then the value of the set

So what do you think about pulling the better RCs and having them graded? Would it be worth the time and grading fees? Or should I just tell him he'd be better off moving them as complete sets?

Another set that's mixed in there is 1989 Bowman.

unless you get back PSA 10's i wouldnt get them graded. Tell him to list and enjoy the free money, whatever it may end at

You might try craigslist instead of Ebay. You might have less potential buyers, but the buyers might pay a bit more since they don't have to pay a big S&H? On second thought, it might end out the same. But might be worth a try first.
