Same here...I bought packs years earlier, but 1983 was my first box. I still have the Gwynn rookie from it. I can tell because it is the only one I have with a pen mark on it. I accidently marked it while I was checklisting.
Boy I miss the days of set collecting:
got it, got it, got it, Need it!, got it, got it, Need it!,

1981 Topps. I didnt actually get a "sealed" box, but my Dad did buy all the packs in a fresh box that was put out at the local deli. Yes, deli. Nothing like getting a ham and swiss sub with a box worth of packs. I still remember the little cap on the bottom left hand corner, and I do recall pulling a Reggie Jackson card, which was major for me then, as I was able to trade him off for pretty much the entire Mets squad. Fun times. We actually used to read the backs of the cards back then. Heh

Anyway, my first true box that I purchased with my own cash was 89 Upper Deck, on the hunt for that ever elusive Griffey Jr. Rookie.

My mom got it for my birthday. I still have some of the cards with the Kool-Aid stains as a reminder from when I spilled some while sorting.

1951 Bowman all series. (I said Topps without thinking..)

My allowance at that time was $1.25 per week. That was a bunch of money at that time for a 13-year old and it paid for the Saturday movie, drinks, popcorn, and candy with money left over to save for cards. I had to ride my bicycle about 3 miles through Nescopeck and Berwick to get to the little Italian grocery store that really stocked a bunch of boxes of Bowman.

I don't remember exactly how much a box was but it had to be less than $3.00.

I also sold cardboard from the local furniture store to supplement my income. I probably made at least $.50 weekly from that to throw in the pot.

I remember when I finished the set and my buddy still had about 5 cards to get. Boy was he jealous.

During high school my allowance increased and I had a paper route that netted about $10.00-12.00 weekly so I was rolling in money.

After finishing all the sets through 1956, I started college and my spare money was spent on books, etc. My college tuition per year was about $500.00 so there was no spare money for cards. :(

1st box was '89 UD, but that wasn't really 'hobby' back then. First real hobby box was '97 Pinnacle Totally Certified which I partially traded for.
