What would it take to get Soriano to the Indians?

I know he is a terrible fielder,but he can hit and has power and bats righthanded.Something that we need bad...I know the chances are slim and none of getting him.I know there are better chances of getting a mid level bat.

I dont think the money he is owed would be a problem for the Indians to take on.

This doesn't really answer the posed question, but he is nowhere near worth the money he is getting paid. I think that would stop most teams from even thinking about him.

From what I hear, the Cubs are willing to pick up 70% of the contract this year and in the future. So, $$$ probably aren't the issue. But I think that Cubs will expect a decent prospect or two if they are willing to eat that much of the contract.

Trick is to get the Cubs to pay a part of salary ( which they would ) and grab John Grabow and also Reed Johnson.

Cubs basically want to shed payroll and get more athletic. The Indians outbidding the Cubs for Chun-Hsiu Chen so:


Cubs get: Chun-Hsiu Chen, Tyler Holt and LeVon Washington

Indians get: Soriano, Grabow, and Reed Johnson with Cubs sending money also.

What is left on his contract. Yeah, only way he gets moved is if Cubs eat some of that money. My guess is if a team is willing to take on more of his $$$ left on his deal, less you have to give up. Wouldn't be surprised if they stick him on waivers hoping some team claims him and they would just let him go for nothing and be out from under his contract.

Judging from the talk (reaction) in these parts......I don't think it would take much.
If anything it's the other way around - as they were saying in the paper today it was once thought it would be impossible to move him and any deal would have to have the Cubs eating salary and even throwing in another player to make it more attractive.

They also noted he does have a no-trade clause. So that could always be a problem. For whatever it's worth the story in the Tribune this morning revolved around a potential deal with the Yankees...pointing out that it's rumored they may be discussing a deal and that the Yankees have been scouting him of late.

Any deal involving the Cubs, I am hoping they can get a young impact arm, or position players who can help out within the next year or so. Farm system is pretty bleak once you get past the first few top prospects. We need to find a young arm or two who can come in and be a dependable 4th or 5th starter.

The less money the Indians accept in the trade, the less they have to trade to Chicago. If they were REALLY interested in paying the whole thing, the cubs wouldnt ask for any players at all.

That's the most ridiculous thing I can think of. First off that article uses RBI to measure productivity. Just the loss of Gardner's defense makes it laughable, replacing him with Soriano's makes it stupid. And the last thing Cashman wants to do is add a contract like that, long and craptastic. There's enough long contracts for aging stars on the team.

There's already one grossly overpaid Soriano on the Yanks.

When I read the thread title, I thought "The Tribe's bullpen is doing really well, why would they want Soriano?"

The Indians have a great offense when the guys are hitting. It's a funny team, they have lots of great hitters, but they're... streaky I guess. It seems like it's all or nothing. Either they throw up 10 runs or barely manage to sqeeze out 1. Rarely does anybody go on a tear and carry the team. The team is either hot or it's not.

It's too bad Sanchez broke Choo's thumb on that dirty play. :evil:

DH/LF. It's not like Jorge is tearing it up and he's gone after this year. If you can get Soriano for a low salary number to be your DH the next 3 years and pick up an elite left handed set up man in the deal, it's not such a bad idea unless you are convinced that Montero is both going to be an excellent hitter and cannot develop into an adequate defensive catcher.
