Isn't it amazing that most of the sets we have named weren't 200 dollars/pack products, but 2.99 a pack! Could that have something to do with it? 2001 Heritage had ALOT going for it, mostly what we all want in products...few redemptions, great autograph checklist with an even shot at pulling all the cards and total transparency in what is actually in the product, not to mention a fun set that was tough to put together. With that said, I will give honorable mention to a few sets:

06 Ginter. Bar none the funnest rip you could have for under 100 dollars. The baseball player autograph checklist by itself was award winning, not to mention a "championship" set that was VERY collectible. Ginter has been tremendously fun to rip over the years, partially due to the surprise factor. You never knew what the next pack could bring, even when you thought you had hit everything already.

00 Greats of the Game No Fleer product will ever be more revered than this set. In my opinion THE best autograph checklist ever assembled. What was even more amazing is that all of them were done ON CARD. A good selection of SP's made this set very popular with set builders too. The base cards were super simple but worked very well for TTM sigs. The 1:48 pack Yankee Clippings set which included one of the first Mantle jersey card, was just icing on the cake. This set is a reminder of what card companies can do when they put their mind to it, and also how diluted the market is today with quality and how glutton it is with quantity. I remember saying to myself back then, "man, 120 dollars for 4 on card autographs seems way too high"

How times have changed.

2000 Greats of the Game - Awesome autograph checklist and base set design

This. One of my All-time favorites.

Also 2003 DLP Rookie Update and 2001 Upper Deck Rookie Update. Both of these were so much fun to break!

I personally love 2002 LCM and 2005 Reflections. I wish they'd do another something similar to Reflections, but not crap (which is what I think M&M was going for, as was Co-Signers)

I've mentioned in several threads already, but 2012 Gypsy Queen is my favorite set (probably a minority opinion here). I really like the design and look of the players on the cards and the auto cards look great. My goal is to finish up the base set and then focus on the SP Variations.

I think topps 2008 moments and milestones!!!
Lots if ways to collect.
By team, by set, by player complete runs, etc
Wish they would do more of these type products. M&M has much more shelf life than other products.

My first thought before reading the thread was 2000 Greats of the Game, but after reading I could also agree with 2001 Topps Heritage and 2005 Absolute. Good point by Kevin that most of the sets mentioned come from cheaper packs. I'll also add that almost all mentioned were produced from 2006 and before when there was a competitive market between several different companies.

So basically what we're saying, except for Markakis, is that it's all been downhill since 2006.

I would put 2000 GOTG up there, but it's all about the autographs. The base set is a pretty tepid design, and aside from the Yankee jerseys and autographs, there's not much in there. They can't be ignored, obv., but Heritage lives on the base set, and all the other stuff is just a bonus, IMHO. I never pulled anything fancier than a Chrome parallel out of 3+ boxes back then, and I kept coming back for more.

2001 GOTG > 2000 GOTG

Its just that it takes more than five years to put everything in adequate perspective (even though most people can't wait but to buy anything right away).

For example, there isn't even a FCB thread entitled "Oh so sweet late '00s" thread yet I believe.

There have been so many great mentions here but what about 2001 Bowman Chrome- Not because of what is in it but what it created. Didn't it launch the BC AUTO rookie craze to what it has been for the past 11 years? Sure 1997-2000 Bowman Chrome were good but wasn't it because 2001 that the *@#% really went crazy? And I don't even collect that stuff. I see this set comparable to 1989 UD for what it did. Just my .02

2002 Donruss Originals.
I loved building the giant base set with the '82, '84, '86 and '88 designs, along with the "what if?" '80 Donruss cards.
I have the entire set, along with most of a second one.

The set is so nostalgic for me since I grew up collecting in the '80s.
I look at that set in my binder all the time.

I don't know why Donruss didn't make an '03 set using the '81, '83, '85, '87 and '89 designs.
The '02 set was very popular.

2001 sp legendary cuts cut signatures.

The history of a sport and it's personalities in one fairly comprehensive set, attractive, and rare and definitely highly desired.

There so many great sets produced from 2000-2005, but 2005 Absolute gets my vote too.
