What would you rather have 6-7 raw 1989 upper deck Ken Griffey Jr. Rc's or one BGS 9.5 Ken Griffey Jr. Rc. I would say the Raw ones would grade between 8.5 and 9 if sent in I didn't see any that would be 9.5 in my opinion. I currently have the raw ones and am considering selling the others to purchase one BGS 9.5.

I'm usually not into the whole grading thing as I feel I am buying the case more than the card but in this one instance I'm leaning towards having one very nice example vs. multiple copies of the same card. I don't know, I'm still undecided and I guess that's why I started this poll. The kid in me loves to have a bunch of those Griffey's because I remember when they were $175 raw and how bad I wanted more of them but only had one in the early 90's. The adult in me thinks it's crazy that I have so many cards in general and would prefer to downsize the collection and have one nice example to look at. I guess this is the natural progression for most collections. What would you choose and why?

Although it is not the most difficult card to Gem, I do not want or require multiple copies so I chose the 9.5 slab.

I'd like to own a 10 one day but otherwise, I'll settle for owning multiple copies of the raw card.

I would rather own a 9.5 of this particular card. I figure it is well worth under $200 for a nice example of one of the most iconic cards of the modern era.
It's such an eye appealing card too...especially slabbed.
Just my thoughts. Either way, it's a great card.

I'd rather have a few raw... My ultimate collecting goal is to obtain an autographed one in person. That way I can get one graphed and have a couple to spare.

I'm not a Griffey player collector so I'd rather have the BGS 9.5.

If he was a guy I had a big collection of, I'd probably go for the quantity. Since it'd be my only Griffey card (or one of very few), I'd want the 9.5.

I'd want the one 9.5 copy over the multiples as I agree that there is no particular need to have a lot of the same card.

Yeah, I'm thinking I agree with not needing multiple copies. Now that you have so many options for nice cards, why would you want mutiple copies? However, back in the day the 80's and early 90's you just didn't have the options that you have now so I always had multiples of key cards and always wanted multiples of key cards. I guess some of that mentallity carried over to when I got back into collecting and was loving picking these up for just $20.

In the early 90's I always kicked myself that I didn't buy more of these when they first came out and were only $12 (which was quite expensive to a 12 yr old), so when I got back into collecting I was more then happy to pick them up at $20. I figured counting inflation that was pretty much the $12 they cost in 1989, but now that they've been sitting in a box for many years I think I'm going to swich it up. Thanks for the responses, I'd love to hear more opinions on this subject as I do find each persons preferences intersting.

If anyone wants a raw 1989 UD griffey for $20 dlvd PM me (I hope that's ok to put in this forum, in this one instance) I think I know a guy that has a few for sale lol.

Since I'd say there is no rush , I'd try to maximize your sales of the ungraded , and buy as to the low side of the market on the 9.5 or 10. Meaning no need to overpay on the Gem and try to get as much as u can for yours

Thanks that's good advice, I'll probably do a good job of getting a good price and a nice card when I buy the 9.5, but just knowing how I am unless someone buys them from here I'll probably just put up the raw griffey's and let them ride .99 auction style. I haven't really seen too much of a difference between off season and on season for his stuff, and the $10 or $20 I extra I would make wouldn't be worthwhile to me since it would prolong the agony of actually getting rid of them, I am good at buying cards but it pains me to sell them. Kind of like taking a band aid off just do it quick before I over think myself and end up with a stash of griffey's like Gwynn545's stash of gwynn. (Which is awesome by the way)

LOL...those are actually pictures from about a year ago or so. I actually sold about 80 of them when the 1998 Red Crusade became available, and I don't regret that one bit. I have built it up to about 80 again since then. I have thought about selling them and upgrading to a mint "one" like you are thinking, but I can't justify it yet. Gwynn rookies are fairly cheap compared to Griffey, and I really do like having a stash, because I can get more and more. If I had the "one", then I'd be done with them, and that's no fun!

This would pretty much sum it up for me. I would take the GEM example over the multiple raw's....

Why not sell all but one and use the funds towards other cards you like? It sounds like graded is not a real priority for you and the other copies are pretty nice, so I don't know why you are limiting yourself to these two options...
