Believe what you want, it took the paypal out of the guy's account when I opened the dispute.

Maybe I tagged it as "payment owed" rather than gift.....doesn't make any difference when fees are concerned.

you are thinking the wrong type of transaction

we are referring to the personal tab, gift option that takes out no fees at all

in this type of transaction there can be no chargeback because of the nature of the payment.

It is sent as a gift, there is NO transaction, so there fore no action required from the receiver in the eyes of paypal.

actually eric is at least partially correct and is NOT thinking of "the wrong type of transaction"....

when you select the personal tab there are 5 options (gift , living expense , PAYMENT OWED , cash advance , and other)....

i can't say for certain if he has successfully disputed a personal transaction , but i can certainly say that payment owed is one option for the fee-free paymentss....

It's basically an e-check, which is maybe why Paypal doesn't charge fees for it. They might be hoping that instead of paying for things with a regular check, individuals will instead open up a Paypal account and send the money right away. That way the check can longer get "lost in the mail." Paypal is probably hoping that these new Paypal users will use their account to buy things from online stores, therefore making them a profit.

I received a $37 payment from somebody, sent as a gift, for some cards and it came through as an eCheck. PayPal said it would be 3-5 days until the funding was cleared. It took until 7:00 PM EST for this to happen, but it was cleared with no problems and no fees.

Yea I had to wait a few days, but it saved me fees which is great since I'm not a business. I just sell on occasion.

Sending payment as a gift also works with your straight up PayPal balance with no fees involved.

You CAN NOT file a dispute with a gift. If you click on the "item not received" option, it tells you that feature is not available with gift payments. The only kind of grievance you can file is for an unauthorized payment.

I've noticed in the past it takes PP about 6 months to catch a "loophole".

And yeah, I only use this option with people I can really trust, like on the trans. boards here, that type-of-thing. Hopefully this option stays open to all, without limits.

Well I just had my first experience with this...

I had a post looking to buy auto baseballs on another board. I get a response and pick out 2 balls I could use. I make an offer which is countered. I agreed to his best price. Now keep in mind in his original post read "delivered". I ask for his paypal addy and responds with it and a reminder from him to make usre I send it "PERSONAL" so he saves fees. I responded by telling him I would have no recourse if I did that and that I dont know him, etc... He respond well if thats the case add $2.00 or send money order. I find it funny that sellers EXPECT the money to be personal! I'm thinking I should walk away from the deal on principle.

Thoughts......

NORMALLY , i'd go ahead and send it personal....but with his insistence to up the total to cover the fees , i'd refuse....i may offer a DISCOUNT to someone who is willing to send the funds fee-free , but no way could i justify charging them more for doing things the "right way"....
