Kinda sounds like what we were saying about A-Rod back in 2010, except he already had 613 HRs. All he had to do was average 21 HR a year and he would beat Bonds. And from 2011-2014 he has averaged 10 HR.

The difference there is injury and steroid suspension.

Injury will more than likely be what stops Pujols from hitting 700 or possibily 600.

I think he'll probably be a full-time DH in two years.

There IS team loyalty in sports though. It happens ALL the time. Pujols specifically stated he wanted to be a Cardinal for life, so critisism, in this particular case, is validated.

Adam Wainwright could have chose not to extend with St. Louis and make a LOT more elsewhere.

But he said he couldn't imagine playing anywhere else, and it's not all about the money.

How much more would he have gotten if he hit the open market?Yankees could easily give him a blank check.

Your point?

I never said he didn't make millions with STL.

I said he'll only get one chance to hit it huge so of course he's going to go to whoever offered the most money

I would and I'm sure 99% of people on this board would too.

I think it's hilarious how people bring up loyalty in sports. It's always the arguement that "well so and so isn't loyal because he left for more money!"

Maybe that's true to a degree, but where is the team loyalty? Teams lowball guys all the time and if a player doesn't succeed or has a bad year, they drop his ass.

Now, you're probably gonna say "well if a player doesn't perform well enough the team can drop him." Yep, very true. But if a player performs well enough to command a mega contract, then why is he considered a traitor to his team and city?

I find that double-standard funny

So...the $120M deal he signed early in his career wasn't his "once chance to strike it rich"?If he took the $210M from Cardinals that's not a "hit it huge" deal?Actually, you are the only one in this thread to even bring up "loyalty".If he would have had admitted he only cared about the dollar figure and left out the "God told me to sign with Angels" charade he wouldn't have lost a lot of respect. And if this were the NFL, then yes, players get kicked to the curb if they don't perform. If Pujols hits .230 for the next 7 years the Angels are still on the hook for all of that deal, there is no "dropping his ass".

Or Griffey.Everyone thought he was going to shatter Aaron's home run record when he signed with the Reds. And he didn't come close.

498 Today, Hes gonna break 500 way before my 3 week prediction. He is really looking much better and healthier this year compared to last couple of years. Still plenty of season to get his Ba above 300. before I can say hes back to form. Still looking good so far!

There's no dropping his ass at all. He has a 10 year contract with the club that starts when he's done playing.

They really screwed the pooch on this deal.

I'll never understand Cards fans who hate Pujols. He gave you two World Series titles. Is that jot enough, you self-entitled brats?

The recognition will finally come now as he start to pass all the all-time great homerun hitters this year and the next, and if this year is any indication he is looking good and may actually somewhat live up to that contract. Yes its early but who would have though Albert would be leading the league in Dingers at any point.

It's awesome to see, and allows fans to start speculating about where he might end up on the all-time list. I still want to see more before I assume he's back, but looking at what he has done to this point in his career is fun. Awesome article by Jason Stark:
