Why?

He was an atrocious offensive player. There is no doubt that he was an exceptional defender, but with his offensive accumen he would not be a ML player today never mind a HOFer.
He wasnt atrocious offensively. He wasnt great offensively, but he wasnt atrocious. To say he wouldnt even play today is a joke. He is the greatest ss to ever play and you are saying he wouldnt even play today. It's too bad he wasnt roided out like Tulowitzky but the guy was amazing.[/quote:152qc3dz]

Ozzie isn't in the top five of shortstops I'm taking if I want to win a game. His defense was great but I'll take Nomar, A-Rod, Jeter, Hanley Ramirez and even the aforementioned Tulowitzki in their primes over Ozzie. And that's just guys in the last 20 years.

I had the opportunity to hang out with Lee Smith several years back. I asked him "Whom was the better SS Ozzie or Cal", since he played with both. His answer, Cal if they needed runs and Ozzie if he were on the mound. He also commented that he had never seen a better defensive SS than Ozzie.

Clearly though praise from peers in the league and the 90%+ first time voters got it wrong and they should hand their votes over to message boards.

EXACTLY. I like you guys just fine, but when it comes down to it I'm listening to the guys who played the game.

Thanks George.

First you are partially wrong. BBWAA vote players for the first period of eligibility and then the veterans committee get to vote, so at some point players "could" get a vote.

Second, none of the above statement said players voted Smith in.....The statement was "praise from players" and "90%+ from voters", these are two separate accolades.

Arod will go into the Hall but my guess is he will be considered at 3B, he was not even the better SS on his team. The above list of players have a combined 8 Gold Gloves.

YES, hitting you would want a different player but a baseball TEAM is made up of many players. Ozzie's 13 Gold Gloves are what got him in the Hall of Fame. There are numerous power hitters in the hall with sub par/average field stats. Give the guy some love for his glove.

You start your team with Ozzie's best year at short and I'll take ANY of A-Rod's full seasons of shortstop. The difference in defense - and remember, A-Rod was no slouch at SS, he won 2 gold gloves - will be MORE than made up for by the unbelievable difference in hitting ability.

Ozzie had a great glove, fine, but these comments about him being the best shortstop of all time are a joke. Defense is important but the difference in offensive production with the list of guys I named is far greater than the difference in defense.

I hate bumping threads (especially when it's mainly arguing), but I saw this and it made me think of this thread.

http://www.sporcle.com/games/deej/worsthof/

First time taking it I made the 93rd percentile... Most of the players that have been mentioned appear in this quiz somewhere (including Ozzie, sorry to give it away :) )

backflips.

A serious question though to the people supporting Ozzie.

Why do you care? He's in. Their never going to revoke his HOF membership.

Why do you care about the opinion of someone who's main arguement is "backflips" :?:
