I'm curious about this because I have a sketch project series in mind.

As an example, currently the Yankees have many stars, but if I had to pick one, Jeter is and has been THE face of the franchise.

Right now my list looks like this:

Ruth
Gehrig
DiMaggio
Berra
Mantle
Munson
Jackson
Mattingly
Jeter

please help me fill in the holes, but keep in mind I'm trying to keep this list to 9 or less of the Yankee's greatest. I know there are a lot of names left off right now but I
not sure about the entire chronology. Thanks for any help.

Please forgive grammar and spelling errors as I'm typing from my phone.

Thought a lot about Mattingly because he fills the chronological slot. Posada and Mussina will miss out because Jeter gets the nod for the modern era. As such Arod will not make the list as well.

thought a lot about Munson as well. I'm not going to be adding managers. Rivera still loses out to Jeter in the modern era. Again I'm not sure about chronology, but for the project's sake, I think Ford loses out to Mantle.

I was trying to figure out where to put Yogi Berra in there as well, but I think he always plated with 1 other player that slightly overshadowed him?? I'd love some help there.

it's not that Mo doesn't deserve to be on the list of greatest Yankees or even players ever, but for this project I'm really only picking 1 player per era. Jeter gets the nod. It may not be fair but all things being equal, I'm giving the nod to hitters.

Well you only have one more face that can represent the Era between Mantle and Jeter......

In the 70s there were some very popular players who weren't superstars per se. Bobby Murcer and Graig Nettles come to mind as being fan favorites in that era, plus Willie Randolph, Mickey Rivers, Bucky Dent, and Lou Piniella along with Munson, before and even after Jackson arrived (who'd be another 'face'). I'd say if you want to have a 'face' covering from Ruth to Jeter, after Mantle it'd be
Munson
Jackson
Mattingly

I dunno about 1969 or 1982. Munson played some in 1969, but 1970 was really his year. Other than that, the team was kind of lackluster. Murcer, probably, was the big name. In 1982, Jackson was gone and Mattingly got in about a half-dozen games. Martin wasn't the manager. Winfield had arrived but I don't think he was ever really embraced, being a free agent and the Mr. May thing. But if you really force the issue you could say Mattingly.

I would almost think that Roger Maris should be in there with Mantle. There was about 5 year stretch in the earlier 60s where i believe they shared the face of the franchise. Sure Mantle may have been a lot more popular, but everyone know Maris was a Yankee as well. Mantle and Maris went hand and hand for those years in the early 60s. Thats why they called them "The M and M boys". In 61 especially it wasn't just Mantle is coming town, it was the M&M boys are coming town. The M&M boys also went to 5 straight World Series together, winning 2 of the 5.

Roger may have unjustly been kept out of the hall of fall but the M&M boys are huge in Yankee folklore and they both were the face of the Yankees in the early 60's.
